THREAD: Wall Street millionaires are in a full meltdown over President Biden’s proposal to raise taxes on the richest Americans.
“It is insanity,” said @ScottMinerd, a billionaire.
President Biden's plan would nearly double the capital gains tax for people making more than $1 million a year. That money would be used to:
- Establish a national paid leave program
- Fight poverty
- Reduce child care costs
- Make pre-k and community college free to all
The Financial Times reports that “financial lobbyists geared up” to fight Biden’s plan as “howls of protest echoed from Wall Street to Silicon Valley.” ft.com/content/b4b054…
“This isn’t about feeling sorry for millionaires,” said hedge fund founder Anthony @Scaramucci, who is worth $200,000,000.
Billionaire @ScottMinerd added, “That’s not because I’m a Wall Street capitalist.”
Minerd previously said the COVID pandemic would "create a structural underclass" and "exacerbate the long-term trend that we’ve had of wealth and income inequality."
Biden wants a 39.6% rate on capital gains for those earning at least $1 million of annual investment income, up from 37%.
The increase would ensure people who work for a living don't pay higher rates than people who make a living from investments. axios.com/biden-capital-…
Brad Dillon, a senior wealth strategist, called Biden’s proposed 2.7% capital gains tax increase a “shocking figure out the gate.”
He said he’s looking to Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema to block it.
Increasing capital gains taxes on the wealthy "might kill the golden goose that is America," said @TimDraper, who is worth $1.5 billion.
Meanwhile, income inequality in the United States today is higher than it was in Rome before the fall of the empire. smithsonianmag.com/history/fall-r…
.@mwsonnenfeldt, a co-founder of @NoLabelsOrg, is also upset about increasing the capital gains tax on the wealthy.
He's the chair of Tiger 21, a membership network focused on "wealth preservation" for 850 members with at least $10 million to invest.

UPDATE: Ohio Republicans have released the voter suppression bill that we first reported last week:
- Requires *two forms of ID* to request mail ballot online
- Bans prepaid postage on ballots, forcing people to pay to vote
- Restricts ballot drop boxes to 1 per county
- Bans in-person voting on Monday before election day, one of the most popular early voting days
- Makes volunteer ballot collection a crime classified as "election fraud"
- Cuts the time available to request an absentee mail ballot
Ohio already has restrictive voting laws and is one of the most gerrymandered states.
It has purged 2 million voters since 2012 & significantly depressed minority turnout.
This bill further targets low-income voters, young people & people of color.
NURSES ON STRIKE: @HospitalNurses have served heroically on the front lines of the COVID pandemic.
But Community Health Services, a huge for-profit corporation that owns the rural, community hospital, has treated hospital workers like they are expendable.
BREAKING: India has just set a new global record for daily COVID-19 infections in a single country: 312,731 in 24 hours.
Virus deaths and cases are spiking worldwide from new, more transmittable variants.
President Biden must #FreeTheVaccine so we can end the pandemic for all.
The global vaccination effort is making progress, but there is still a massive shortage of vaccines. US and EU drug companies can only manufacture so much at a time.
More than 100 nations have asked the @WTO to let them manufacture it themselves.
But the US is blocking them.
President Biden can save millions of lives around the world without taking a single dose of vaccine away from Americans.
He just needs to support a waiver of global patent protection laws, so poorer countries can manufacture the vaccine themselves.
Tomorrow, President Biden’s Postal Service board nominees will testify before the Senate.
They need to be asked about how Amazon wields its private power and influence over USPS, a federal agency that’s meant to serve the public good. The details are alarming.
Amazon holds immense sway over the Postal Service.
It gets discount prices on shipping parcels through USPS, including shipping on Sundays when standard mail isn't delivered.
Amazon’s contract with USPS isn’t public. Congress can demand disclosure of it. We do know that in 2019 Amazon drove $3.9 billion in revenue and $1.6 billion in profit for USPS.
