NURSES ON STRIKE: @HospitalNurses have served heroically on the front lines of the COVID pandemic.

But Community Health Services, a huge for-profit corporation that owns the rural, community hospital, has treated hospital workers like they are expendable.
.@HospitalNurses' union contract expired in February.

But they say hospital management is not negotiating in good faith.

One worker tells us, "They have done everything in their power to make sure that we are not able to come to an agreement on a strong union contract.”
.@SEIUHCPA is negotiating for better safety measures and staffing levels, and is asking CHS to invest more in the hospital.

CHS received over $700 million in pandemic relief and has made over $1.5 billion selling hospitals just like Tyler.
The workers are currently on day 3 of their strike.

They have received support from lawmakers in Pennsylvania and across the country, including @BernieSanders, @RepFlynn, and @RepMadden.

1. Today, @kroger is closing two stores in Seattle to retaliate against a local $4/hr hero pay law. More than 100 workers will be fired or dislocated.

Kroger made $2.8B in profit in 2020. CEO Rodney McMullen got a pay raise to $21M.

Some heart-breaking details are emerging. Image
2. At one of the stores, neighbors and customers raised $205.88 for each of the 51 impacted workers as a gesture of thanks.

Employees, "some with tears in their eyes," received a round of applause and kind words at a community farewell event.

3. One of the shuttered locations has been an active grocery store for 44 years. Neighbors are lamenting the loss of convenience & a community hub.

No other grocery chain except Kroger, America’s largest, has closed locations to protest hazard pay laws.

UPDATE: Ohio Republicans have released the voter suppression bill that we first reported last week:

- Requires *two forms of ID* to request mail ballot online
- Bans prepaid postage on ballots, forcing people to pay to vote
- Restricts ballot drop boxes to 1 per county

1/
- Bans in-person voting on Monday before election day, one of the most popular early voting days
- Makes volunteer ballot collection a crime classified as "election fraud"
- Cuts the time available to request an absentee mail ballot
Ohio already has restrictive voting laws and is one of the most gerrymandered states.

It has purged 2 million voters since 2012 & significantly depressed minority turnout.

This bill further targets low-income voters, young people & people of color.

THREAD: Wall Street millionaires are in a full meltdown over President Biden’s proposal to raise taxes on the richest Americans.

“It is insanity,” said @ScottMinerd, a billionaire.
President Biden's plan would nearly double the capital gains tax for people making more than $1 million a year. That money would be used to:

- Establish a national paid leave program
- Fight poverty
- Reduce child care costs
- Make pre-k and community college free to all
The Financial Times reports that “financial lobbyists geared up” to fight Biden’s plan as “howls of protest echoed from Wall Street to Silicon Valley.”

BREAKING: India has just set a new global record for daily COVID-19 infections in a single country: 312,731 in 24 hours.

Virus deaths and cases are spiking worldwide from new, more transmittable variants.

President Biden must #FreeTheVaccine so we can end the pandemic for all.
The global vaccination effort is making progress, but there is still a massive shortage of vaccines. US and EU drug companies can only manufacture so much at a time.

More than 100 nations have asked the @WTO to let them manufacture it themselves.

But the US is blocking them.
President Biden can save millions of lives around the world without taking a single dose of vaccine away from Americans.

He just needs to support a waiver of global patent protection laws, so poorer countries can manufacture the vaccine themselves.

Tomorrow, President Biden’s Postal Service board nominees will testify before the Senate.

They need to be asked about how Amazon wields its private power and influence over USPS, a federal agency that’s meant to serve the public good. The details are alarming.
Amazon holds immense sway over the Postal Service.

It gets discount prices on shipping parcels through USPS, including shipping on Sundays when standard mail isn't delivered.

Sometimes even your mail is delayed so USPS can deliver Amazon packages.
postaltimes.com/postalnews/ama…
Amazon’s contract with USPS isn’t public. Congress can demand disclosure of it. We do know that in 2019 Amazon drove $3.9 billion in revenue and $1.6 billion in profit for USPS.

But Amazon isn't just a huge customer of USPS—it’s a growing competitor too.

Today, White House @PressSec Jen Psaki stated that the President does not support congressional efforts to legalize marijuana.

Biden's position "isn't the same as what the House and Senate have proposed," she said.
91% of Americans believe cannabis should be legalized in some form and 61% of Americans believe it should be legal for recreational use.

It's time for President Biden to support legalization.
Cannabis legalization is a racial justice issue.

Black people are nearly 4x more likely than white people to be arrested for cannabis possession, despite roughly equal usage rates.

The war on drugs is a failed approach that was designed to criminalize Black and brown people.
