An instance from 2016 India about how much even the smallest such extra cash gifts mean to India's non-elites forced to live in a "cheap labor is our competitive advantage" economy in times of crisis. Modi had declared 85% of all cash illegal overnight. India was in panic.
There was a strict limit of how much cash you could withdraw from YOUR OWN bank account. A month into that chaos, we had to fly to Bombay overnight cos father in law, who was visiting india, passed away there. And take care of a LOT of things, without PayTM (cos foreigners).
My family in pune, hers in bombay, lots of things to be done in both cities. Had to make many trips between and within both cities, and neither of us have ever driven a car in India. Thankfully our usual cab for hire dude said he is okay with checks or transfers later from mom.
So for about a week, Santosh drove us all over western maharastra. And I'd carry a check from my parents and write him one at the end. Cos we had to ration our own cash. You all remember india in December 2016.
Towards the end of that visit, I was about to make the last payment.
And I realized, we are leaving India tomorrow. Going direct to BOM airport where cards work everywhere. I have a reasonable amount of leftover cash that I don't really need anymore. My parents don't really need cos they have paytm etc. And it's not legal tender in NYC.
So I asked Santosh, is it okay if I make this payment (about ₹6000/$85) for the 2 days of pune-bombay and pune and bombay completely by cash.
I checked with him cos fellow brahmins (mostly bhakt) were acting like cash payments are treason, online payments are patriotic etc 🙄.
The guy said, yes sir. And when I handed him the cash, literally started crying. CRYING! A very much masculine hirsute dude, who was usually very sang froid and laconic. Starts crying because I gave him cash. Cash he earned btw. Imagine getting a chauffeured SUV for 2 days at $85
Wife and I were both a little thrown off because he was never very expressive. But seeing that cash in his hand kind of broke a dam, "Thank you! Haven't seen this much cash since notebandi. So many things I can't buy for my children or wife because I don't have cash. Thank you!"
What for me was an afterthought, just giving him my leftover cash before leaving for the US..... most of it NOT a tip but payment for services rendered... made him break down front. Proud guy, great trusted driver, great family. Crying cos he got cash.
Because Modi wanted U.P.
This time, the crisis is much MUCH worse. This time, it is because Modi wants Bengal. This time, your direct cash gifts will mean a lot.

Ah, finally Abhishek Asthana aka greedy gobarsingh has decided to break the years long social media detente we had by QT-insulting me. And the weather is getting warm enough for me to take my gloves off. I knew this was coming since he went full fascist.
I've been meaning to share this for a while but held off because of the detente and a prior personal relationship.

Don't call him gabbbar. The unimaginative plagiarized name that characterizes his second hand identity.

Call him Abhishek Asthana.
Anytime you say "damn this gabbbar is such a sleazy sanghi", you help him continue to build his faux brand. Ever wonder why he doesn't show his face? Ponder that. He's actually a conventionally good looking guy.

He doesn't even have the originality to have his own face as a DP

Deflect criticism from whom from what? This sense of entitled self-importance is getting comical. That Biden's people are doing this for public perception is jise ridiculous. Literally nothing in his presidency or career depends on any way on India's approval. Nothing.
You think Republicans are going to come after him with "why aren't you exporting stuff to shithole countries?"
What exactly do these people think the countywide twitter tantrum has caused the white house other than a minor nuisance?
Other than indian Americans and a few policy junkies in the media, no one on the streets of USA is thinking about what indian twitter thinks of president biden. India holds not a single chip against him. He's trying to work like a normal president. That's it.

And Biden knows all too well how these brown Trumps operate. They need a constant supply of bogeymen and threats to stay in power. Like Rihanna was for a while. Now this. In 48 hours it'll be some new enemy they will find. They actually serious work on 48-72 hr timelines.
In a few days, Psaki will come out and announce whatever they can spare and actually get done including exports. But by then, sanghi twitter will have created a new bogeyman and everyone will be like oh yeah.. America... Exports... Rings a bell. So last week though!
There is nothing actually positive in the country to tout on social media for about 7 years now, unless you get your rocks off at Muslims, Dalits, Sikhs, harassed regularly.
That's why the sangh parivar's social media team has to keep finding new enemies to keep the flock intact

The big MAGAsanghi IT cell win this week has been to gaslight even a lot of indian progressives into a lot of anger and blame on Biden, 3 months into his term. And for some bizarre reason Harris whose only real constitutional power is breaking senate ties, currently a full job.
The win, spurred by the notoriously slippery Gaddar Poonawalla's tweet, was made possible because there indeed are legit problems with the restrictions and contracts. But they are the work of Trump & his default sociopathic approach to global politics. Whom magasanghis supported.
Not every or even most indian social media rants against Biden come from IT cell or sanghis. Many are progressive, well meaning, exhausted indians stretched to their absolute limit. *That* is the IT Cell and Poonawalla's win. Just like not every SSR warrior was a bhakt.

Uncle Joe is not flawless, but he does NOT do grudges. Especially when people are hurt more than governments. India needs to take a deep breath and realize that this sudden wholesale blaming of the US is the biggest #MalviyaMavalis IT cell win since the SSR distractions.
As an American, I'm doing my best to pressure the federal govt to do more. But a lot of indian anger against the US, while very understandable, is misguided.
First of all, US system is way more complex and slow moving, especially after Trump gutted almost every agency.
Sure, a lot of these controls can and should be moved. But Biden is not an "announce something on primetime news at 8 pm and let everyone figure it out at midnight" type leader. Nor is Klain. In a couple of days, I'm sure we will hear of more action and help for India.
