(1,4) Just listened to attorneys in NC discussing the recent police shooting. I am upset. First, it's not accurate that only black parents bury kids from gun violence. Trust me, I buried my daughter. Second, they mentioned Parkland. I wish police lethally stopped her killer.
(2,4) However, the attorney statement was made without any reality to facts of that day in Parkland. Using my daughters murder to make the a point in a racial conversation is has me very upset. I've traveled this country to all communities since she was murdered to fight for
(3,4) gun safety. Not one word was mentioned about the reality of gun violence and guns in the press conference. If we do more to address the reality of guns in our communities and the threat of civilian gun violence in our communities my hope is that we will be having fewer
(4,4) conversations of any gun violence in any community between civilians and other civilians or civilians and police. I would love if the attorneys at today's press conference would reach out to me and join me in working to reduce gun violence. Let's do this together.

(1,4) We have over 400,000,000 weapons on our streets and people determined to use them. @WhipClyburn is absolutely right, we need our police officers. The question is how we go forward. On a personal level, I wish the police shot and killed my

(3,4) communities that they serve.. I am going to ask all who respond to acknowledge with me that we cannot change history and what has already happened. The question is how do we go forward? I would love to work with my friends in Government, maybe even @POTUS, and media to

(1,4) Last week, the night before the House vote on HR8, I spoke with a Republican member of the house who voted yes the last time but was saying he would vote no this time and in fact he did. During our conversation, he told me he was angry that the bill had changed slightly.
(2,4) He was making an excuse because he feared voting yes. He also told me that it was not worth it to vote yes as he thought the bill was as he said "dead on arrival in the Senate." I replied that his assumption may be wrong as he has no control over the next mass shooting.
(3,4) Yesterday was the latest mass shooting. Today, the Senate Judiciary under the leadership of @DickDurbin will hold hearings. I urge the Senate to protect Americans. IT IS TIME TO SAVE LIVES!!! If Democrats need to do this alone, do so without the filibuster but do so.

(1,4) Jaime loved to mess with my cellphone. On random days throughout my calendar, she created a special day called “Love Jaime Day.” It was like Valentines day on steroids for Jaime and I. 3 years ago today and only weeks after Jaime was murdered, I was in Washington DC for
(2,4) my first visit to start working on gun safety. As I was walking into the Rayburn Congressional building, a calendar reminder went buzzed my phone. It was “Love Jaime Day.” As I write in my book Find The Helpers, I fell apart and sat crying in front of the Rayburn
(3,4) building. However, I soon realized that this was my first sign from Jaime since she was murdered and I pulled myself together. As I write “she was with me as I was about to begin fighting for her.” For those going through grief now, always look for the signs.

Dear Jaime,

3 years ago your voice was silenced. I sent you and your brother to school to safely learn. I rushed you out the door that morning never expecting what would happen next. A school shooting!!! You were 14 and only a freshman in High School.

(1,11)
(2,11) Your brother Jesse survived…you did not.

You are on my mind every second of every minute of every day. I constantly relive your last seconds in my mind. Did you suffer? I will never know, but I fear that you did. Did I do enough to protect you?
(3,11) The answer is… No!!! I did not… and for that I will carry guilt for the rest of my life. My voice was not fighting the evil of gun violence before it was my daughter and for that I am sorry.

Today you should be a senior in school. We should be celebrating love.

(1,6) On Wednesday, when America was under attack, I had no idea. I was involved in a 4 hour interview discussing the rise of the gun lobby and its impact on America. I discussed how messaging like this from the NRA is a lie and the use of the 2A language is fueling hate filled
(2,6) rage that is fueling white supremacy groups & that they had a loud megaphone in the White House. In fact, the megaphone spoke loudly at the State Of The Union & I was removed for calling him out. We also discussed how this group of 2A liars is trying to normalize the idea
(3,6) of guns like the AR 15 in public places and visible at peaceful protests and at Government buildings. Here is the crazy part. I said it was predictable, inevitable, but also preventable that something terrible will happen before the transition of power.

(1,4) America, today I am hopeful. I know that sounds hard to believe but here me out. The final paragraph of my book Find The Helpers is

"To anyone who reads this book, especially the kids and young adults, and to the future leaders and heroes, you will have many moments in
(2,4) your life, and some bigger than others. Ultimately, what matters more than the moment is how you respond to it. How you react to your moment when it comes is what will define you."

Today was a defining moment for America. What matters now is how we react to this moment.
(3,4) While today was difficult for all of us, it will also change us and our politics. We will move forward with President @JoeBiden. We will see the emergence of unexpected heroes and leaders. Today is a day where Americans saw the reality of the threat to Democracy.
