TUESDAY #COVID19Colorado update

Headline: Hospitalizations still slowly headed up. Positivity above 6%. Thirty percent of state fully vaccinated

HOSPITALIZATIONS
covid+ ONLY

Today: 622 (up 16)
Last week: 553

#9news
POSITIVITY

Above 6
CASES

above 1600

(no clear sign we've hit peak yet)
VACCINE

30% of CO population (essentially) FULLY vaccinated
What's it all mean?

Safe to say, variant (B.1.1.7) is moving its way through Colorado

State epidemiologist told me today it's having an impact on hospitalization numbers

The race to vaccinate continues
Now comes the hard part

We've reached the point where those who really, really want a dose, have gotten one

We're at 30% fully protected. Will need more to get to herd

Safe to say, this is an important phase we're entering

Take care

THREAD

This a plea to journalists.

When someone dies under a pile of officers, the death is NOT an isolated event.

And there are many more deaths than just the death of George Floyd.

Let's start with 4/19/21 death of #MarioGonzalez

Body camera released yesterday

1/ Image
Gonzalez was held prone (on stomach) and handcuffed for multiple minutes before he stopped breathing

Happened in Alameda, CA, day before George Floyd verdict.

It's generated quite a few stories now that body cam is out

It's natural for people to see this and instantly think of Floyd

But here's the thing,

Our ongoing #PRONE investigation has found dozens of other deaths just like the deaths of Floyd and Gonzalez

How many?

My list now has 118 names. People like Roy Nelson. Died in 2015

Reminder to all journalists...

This is how Minneapolis initially reported the death of #GeorgeFloyd
We found more than 100 cases... similar to George Floyd's

Very few received little more than local news coverage.

Journalists...

Something you can do right away.

Ask your local law enforcement department/office what its policy is on "prone restraint"

Specifically, what the policy is once person is prone and handcuffed

US DOJ has recommended, since 1995, to do this:

Trending slowly down... Ideally this is a sign... (but keep in mind testing numbers are pretty low again... so that'll influence this too)

As you consider the closing arguments in the #DerekChauvinTrial...

... please consider this:

In 1995 -- 25 years prior to the death of George Floyd -- the US Dept of Justice warned law enforcement of the potential dangers of prone restraint

this is NOT a poorly understood phenomenon

And... best practices are crystal clear

Note this line from report
The conclusion of 1995 remains the conclusion of today
