The General Hospital, Ijede, has joined the rest of the world to mark the World Immunisation Week with a call to the citizens to embrace immunisation, stressing that the administration of vaccines is highly effective in reducing the severity or spread of diseases.

The Principal Nursing Officer (PNO) in Charge of Child Welfare Clinic at the facility, Mrs. Mary Okoh, stated this in her address at the ‘Health Talk’ organised by the hospital for breastfeeding mothers as part of activities to commemorate the Y2021 World Immunisation Week.

According to her, getting immunised reduces an individual’s chance of dying or being infected with a particular type of disease or virus, as the vaccine builds the immune system and reduces the chance of being hospitalised.

She added the administration of the antigen, through inoculation, induces an immune response in the body to produce antibodies that will help in developing immunity.

While stating that the noticeable adverse effects of inoculations include fever, painful and swollen injection spots, irritability in children and fainting in severe cases, Okoh, however, revealed that these adverse signs differ because bodies react differently to antigens.

She noted that giving pain relievers to children before and after immunisation is not advisable except only when the child has a fever or feels very irritable.

Okoh informed the participants that the lukewarm attitude by some people to the COVID-19 vaccine is based on myth and hearsay, stressing that the more people are vaccinated, the earlier we would eradicate COVID-19 and other diseases from our midst.
