Big day for people who care about courts and judicial diversity. Biden's first judicial nominees get their Senate committee hearing this a.m.

First up:

*Ketanji Brown Jackson, nominee to the D.C. Circuit
*Candace Jackson-Akiwumi, nominee to the 7th Circuit
Demand Justice is among the progressive groups making a big push to get Jackson confirmed. Her face is plastered on lamp posts around Capitol Hill today. Image
Lotta buzz about Jackson potentially being Biden's next Supreme Court pick.

Lots of Supreme Court justices once sat on the D.C. Circuit, which is where Jackson is up for a seat. If she's confirmed, she'll take Merrick Garland's old seat.
Today is a "historic day" for Biden's admin, says Sen. Durbin.

"Looking at this slate of nominees, I'm struck that they not only bring qualifications that are extraordinary ... but also demographic and professional diversity. We need it on the federal bench."
Durbin notes that Trump confirmed 54 judges (that's a lot) to lifetime seats on federal appeals courts.

"Not one of them was Black."
Sen. Grassley begins this hearing by asking Democrats if they're going to apologize to Amy Coney Barrett.
Grassley suggests Democrats walk next door to the Supreme Court and apologize to Amy Coney Barrett for saying she was going to steal the 2020 election for Trump and repeal Obamacare.

I do not think that is going to happen.
(Maybe they'd do it if Grassley and other GOPers apologized to Merrick Garland for denying him a Supreme Court?)
"The far-left group Demand Justice... says you can tell what kind of judge someone will be by their clients," says Grassley. "They strongly support [these nominees] b/c their time as federal defenders apparently caused them to pursue social justice rather than follow the law."
Congrats on the Grassley shout-out, @WeDemandJustice!
A note about Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, whose nomination I suspect Republicans will try to weaken today given the SCOTUS buzz around her.

The Senate unanimously confirmed her to her current seat on D.C.'s district court in 2013.

Voice vote.
Also... Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is related to Paul Ryan! Whaaaaat.

They're related by marriage. h/t @Spinsterellla

Sen. Cornyn: "Our Democratic colleagues seem to be placing so much emphasis on race."

"What role does race play, Judge Jackson, in the kind of judge that you have been and the kind of judge you will be?"
Jackson: "I don't think race plays a role in the kind of judge that I have been and that I would be in the way you asked that question."

"I am doing a certain thing when I get my cases. I'm looking at the arguments, the facts and the law."
"I would think race would be the kind of thing that would be inappropriate to inject in my evaluation of a case," says Jackson.

"I've experienced life in perhaps a different way than some of my colleagues because of who I am.... I hope it would be valuable if I am confirmed."
Cornyn: "Are you familiar with an organization called Demand Justice?"

Jackson: "I know of Demand Justice."

Cornyn: Did you know they're spending $ to promote your nomination?

Jackson: I'm aware they are advertising.
Cornyn: Demand Justice says the Supreme Court is broken. Do you agree?

Jackson: I've never said that + not able to comment on SCOTUS as a judge.

Cornyn: Demand Justice says SCOTUS has been captured by partisan GOP interests.

Jackson: Again, not able to comment on SCOTUS.
Senate Republicans are all about @WeDemandJustice in this hearing.
Sen. Tillis is up. He begins his questions for the nominees by talking about... Demand Justice.

"Demand Justice is a dark money liberal group..."

Tonight another Indigenous-led group, NDN Collective, is calling on CNN to fire Rick Santorum for his offensive comments about Native Americans -- and to do better in general with lifting up Indigenous voices.
"This isn’t the first time that CNN or its commentators have made statements that outright erase Indigenous people.... CNN needs to take responsibility for their role in maintaining the structure of white supremacy, and that goes beyond an apology." Image
More from NDN Collective leaders. Really taking aim at CNN as the problem here, not just Santorum. Image

Biden urges Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, one of his legacy issues.

"27 years ago I wrote it," says Biden.

Senate GOPers let its authorization expire in 2019 b/c they opposed new protections for LGBTQ + Native victims of abuse & a gun safety provision.
VAWA is currently waiting for action in the Senate. The House already passed its bipartisan bill in March.

VAWA has the same problems in the Senate that it had 2 years ago: GOPers aren't fans of the House bill's new LGBTQ, Native + gun safety provisions. huffpost.com/entry/violence…
The House-passed VAWA bill would prevent people convicted of abusing dating partners from owning guns, closing the "boyfriend loophole."

That's easily the bill's biggest obstacle in the Senate. Biden seems aware of this. He specifically cited it during his remarks tonight.

8 of the 11 Republican lawmakers/doctors in this video voted to overturn the 2020 election based on lies about voter fraud that led to a violent Capitol insurrection -- and they voted to do so just hours after the insurrection.
This should be an asterisk to anything that any of these Republicans ever say or do again while in public office.
So on the one hand, good on them for doing this video.

On the other hand, they tried to thwart democracy hours after a violent insurrection fueled by the same lies about voter fraud they helped spread.

Some good news for tribes outta the Interior Dept today: Secretary Deb Haaland is reversing Trump-era actions that made it a lot harder for tribes to put land into trust.
"It's hard to express how big a deal this," said an Interior Dept official in a call with media.

Haaland is reversing Trump's 2017 action making Interior Dept HQ in DC oversee all land-into-trust decisions vs field offices doing it. It's meant lots of delays + costs for tribes.
Put into perspective:

During Obama's admin, the Interior Dept put more than 560K acres of land in trust to tribes.

During Trump's admin, under his changed rules, the Interior Dept put 75K acres of land into the trust.

Rick Santorum says "nothing" was in America before white colonizers arrived. huffpost.com/entry/rick-san…
He didn't stop there.

“I mean, yes we have Native Americans but candidly there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture."
Rick Santorum is currently a senior political commentator for CNN.

That's all.

Just caught Lisa Murkowski's floor speech on why she sided with Democrats and helped narrowly confirm Vanita Gupta as asst AG.

Alaska tribes had a lot of sway in her decision.

Murkowski is looking out for Alaska Native women facing horrific levels of domestic violence.
Gupta will oversee DOJ's Office of Violence Against Women. She's been a leader on VAWA + has real experience addressing violence against women.

Murkowski said she talked to Gupta for a long time about justice and the "tragedy" that Native women face such high levels of violence.
Particularly in Alaska, Native women "experience rates of domestic violence and sexual assault that are shocking, disturbing and wrong," said Murkowski.

Despite all that's been done, "we have not been able to turn the corner" on stemming this "scourge."
