Alrighty. Fact checking the president's speech re: gun control. I hope ya'll held onto your hats because he took you for a ride.
(1) We're not in a gun violence epidemic under any meaningful use of the word "epidemic." Gun homicide and gun crime rates are far lower today than in the 1990s. There's still work to be done, especially for gun suicide, but the data doesn't show an "epidemic."
(2) Speaking of the 1990s crime decline, it had nothing to do with the federal assault weapons ban. The official report on that ban literally said that its renewal would have little effect, as these guns were rarely used in crime even BEFORE the ban.
(2)(A) ...which is why, even though Americans have purchased millions of these guns since the ban lapsed in 2004, crime rates didn't shoot back up to pre-ban levels. Shocking, I know. They're still rarely used in crime after the ban expired, too.
(3) Holy [expletive]. No, "high capacity" magazines don't suddenly enable semi-auto rifles to fire 100 rounds "in seconds." This is a lie. The rate of fire for ALL semi-autos for normal shooters is roughly 45-65 rounds per MINUTE. 100 per MINUTE if you're *really* good.
(3)(a) He is intentionally conflating semi-autos with their fully automatic [and heavily regulated] counterparts, which CAN fire 600-800 rounds per minute. But in no world does a factory standard 30 round mag get you to 100 rounds in "seconds" with a semi-auto.
(4) Notice that the President talks about 100-round drum magazines when referring to "high capacity" mags. He wants you to think those fairly atypical and non-standard mags are what he's interesting in banning, not turning you into a felon for a factory-standard 15/30 round mag.
(5) No, the majority of gun owners absolutely do not support bans on semi-automatic rifles deemed "assault weapons." He's been called out on this by even left-leaning fact checkers. He keeps saying it.
(6) When talking about support for UBCs, it's important to remember that support for expanded background checks does NOT mean support for a specific bill, especially when that specific bill criminalizes the most common, temporary, and low-risk transfers without paying an FFL.
(7) Yes, the 2A is not unlimited. No, banning millions of commonly owned semi-automatic rifles that are rarely used in crime is NOT comparable to laws about yelling false fire alarms in crowded theaters. It's comparable to banning theaters. And that's unconstitutional.
(8) Courtesy of the @LatinoRifleOrg, Biden's joke about deer with Kevlar vests is hilarious because an AR-15 round [.223/5.56] is less powerful than...well...any round you'd use to hunt deer.

It's also irrelevant because the Second Amendment isn't about hunting.

Stop this. I was here when BLM shut down the district every night for weeks, destroyed countless businesses, assaulted countless cops, and anyone arrested was basically released the next day without charges. Stop these lies about how they were treated.
It can be true at the same time that every single punk at the Capitol yesterday should have the book thrown at them. But stop pretending BLM and Antifa haven't gotten away with little punishment relative to egregious damage.
It really is not hard to want any and all mobs held accountable for violent, destructive attacks...whether against businesses, democratic institutions, or the public writ-large. It really is not hard to call for that standard.

Imagine comparing four years of a democratically elected official you don't like to decades of apartheid in South Africa and wanting to be taken seriously.
And yet, there is reality in which people like this get power and exact vengeance for all the perceived wrongs that occurred...which are largely just "Orange Man bad, we lost elections and the other side didn't do what we wanted."
For those confused about where apartheid comes in here, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was the name of the post-apartheid quasi-judicial body that investigated and held public hearings over human rights violations suffered during apartheid.

That is quite literally the opposite of her judicial philosophy, which is that her personal opinion or preference is irrelevant and the clear, original meaning controls.

But I get how people who want judges to rule in tandem with their personal beliefs get this confused a lot.
This is what happens when you spend so long relying on judges to legislate or amend the constitution from the bench.

You think that's what every judge does. And you can't think of any other reason they might reach a conclusion...like "the text and original meaning demand it."
I mean, it's terrifying.

ACB says "hey, the text, history, and tradition of the 2A is pretty clear that you can't permanently ban non-violent people from owning guns."

They insist it's "ACB personally wants to give the Boston Bombers AR-15s in prison because she's a maniac."

Earlier this week, I spent over an hour in line [on a weeknight, in a dress, during a pandemic] in order to pay my final respects to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Yes, I often vehemently disagreed with her.

But this is a THREAD on the respect I have for her, anyway. ImageImageImage
I am fully aware that the first woman on SCOTUS was Sandra Day O'Connor, not RBG. But in many respects, O'Connor was "before my time." She retired from the bench when I was in grade school. It was RBG, rather, who stood prominent before me as a woman pursuing a career in law.
And despite all the differences in our respective legal philosophies, Justice Ginsburg and women like her not only paved my way, but sometimes cut down trees to clear a path that didn't initially exist.

I watched the video of the Tulsa officers shot by a non-compliant driver during a traffic stop. I'm tired of pretending like this type of "things quickly go bad because some jackass doesn't want to get arrested" isn't exactly why I don't feel bad for Jacob Blake.

THREAD:
I don't know what the officer saw before he shot an irate, non-compliant Blake as he stormed toward his vehicle. But I know what flashed through my mind the first time I watched the video.

I saw Deputy Kyle Dinkheller being executed. I heard his screams.

I saw Daniel Clary grabbing his gun through his driver's side window and almost two Pennsylvania state troopers.

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Let's have some real talk - for everyone, but especially for gun owners.

THREAD:

My personal history of mental health struggles isn't exactly a secret, even if it's something I don't often talk about. Let's talk about it.
I really struggled during my first year of college. I was away from home for the first time, under the immense pressure of being a student-athlete, and dealing with an underlying physical illness [well, several, actually, but we didn't know that at the time].
My spiritual life was in shambles. I felt miserable, was miserable, and didn't know how to tell anyone I was miserable. And my God, did I feel so incredibly alone. Years later, I shared my brushes with suicidality [and recovery] with @dearworld
