What should one do when one sees a casual acquaintance whom one has not spoken to in many years having a protracted mental breakdown on social media?
This was on IG video, not Twitter, so it’s quite explicit
Were it not for social media the chances of my seeing this person again in my life would be entirely random. Neither of us would call the other.
I guess it’s not my place to intervene. It’s just interesting to think about how the bystander effect can be magnified so drastically by the Internet
On Twitter the issue is different, not just a clear case of individual psychopathology, but of collective online radicalization through emotional contagion.
Not sure what can be done about the latter either but it starts with writing a book patiently explaining what’s happened...
