Studies show people prefer to add, even when subtracting may give a better solution. This is because adding is our default behaviour and we need incentives to subtract.
The year was 2004. I was working as a programmer in Hyderabad. Fresh out of college, it was an amazing experience and an excellent way to learn while I reappeared for my MBA entrance. 2/7
I worked on a product for the stock markets. It was a stable product and I had to review the code for bugs and correct it. I had to learn a new programming language and update myself on the stock market.
Overall, + on learning. 3/7
While reviewing a particular bug, I found the issue was with a set of If clauses, which missed a particular case. Another If clause would have solved it.
But it cluttered things up a bit. I wanted to do something a bit more elegant. 4/7
So, I took out a pen and paper and wrote down the scenarios. Instead of all the If clauses, all I needed was a single line, using a NOT and a XOR gate. 5/7
Taking a step back from your routine and thinking after a pause with a clearer mind, can help you unclog your grey cells and subtract for a better solution. 6/7

Amalasuintha was born around 493 to Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths, and Audofledis of the Franks. Her uncle Chlodovech was the King of the Franks and her illegitimate half sister Theodegothia was married to King Alaric of the Visigoths. 1/10
After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, it was quickly eaten up by the many Germanic tribes that supplied soldiers for the Empire. The Franks ruled over Gaul, the Visigoths in Hispania, while Theodoric conquered the Italian peninsula in 493. 2/10
Henri de Hainaut was born around 1176 to Count Baudouin of Hainaut and Marguerite de Flandre (later Countess of Flanders). Not much is known of his early life till 1201, when he set out for the Levant with his brother Baudouin to conquer Jerusalem. 1/10
Things got ugly when they reached Venice. It was expected Venice would provide them transport by sea, but the Crusaders didn't have the money for it. Instead, Venice wanted them siege Zadar, a port on the Adriatic, part of the Christian Kingdom of Croatia. 2/10
Baudouin was born in 1161 to Count Amaury of Jaffa & Ashkelon and Agnes de Courtenay. The young prince also had an elder sister, Sibylle, and would have a half sister, Isabelle, later. Amaury became the King of Jerusalem after his brother also named Baudouin died in 1162. 1/10
In Egypt, the Fatimid Caliphate had started to crumble. Amaury saw an advantage and pursued it. Nur ad-Din Zengi, Emir of Aleppo and Damascus, also had his plans. Initally, Amaury was ahead, but Nur ad-Din and his general Shirkuh countered it successfully. 2/10
The year was 2012. I was working on a new billing software for my distribution firm. It had a PHP based frontend with a MySQL based backend running on an Apache server. (This idea came from a Tweetup). Everything was fine, but it was taking ages to get an invoice printed. 2/9
When you have to print dozens of invoices daily, this is a problem. 3/9
Zabel was born in 1216 to King Lewon of Cilicia and Sibylle of Cyprus. Lewon had been ruling Armenians living in Anatolia from 1187. He was crowned King in 1199, in return for supporting the Third Crusade that had been set out to recapture Jerusalem. 1/10
Armenia was an ancient nation that reached its greatest extent during the rule of Tigran in 1st century BC, ruling an empire stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. After falling briefly under Roman hegemony, it was conquered by Arabs. 2/10
Melisende was born around 1105 to Baudouin de Rethel and Morfia of Melitene. Her father had accompanied the Boulogne brothers, Godefroi and Baudouin, when they set out towards the Levant on the bugle call of the Pope. 1/10
The two Baudouins headed for Edessa first, where they were received by the local Armenian ruler, Thoros. After marrying his daughter, Baudouin de Boulogne acquired Edessa in 1098. Baudouin de Rethel then set off for Jerusalem which was being besieged by Godefroi de Boulogne. 2/10
