In the late fall a deer came into our yard with a badly broken hind leg, the bone piercing through the skin. It sat on the grass and seemed unable to move. I was going to shoot it but my wife insisted I not. It eventually hobbled into the woods where I assumed it would soon die

As winter came a small herd of deer regularly came through the property. The hobbled deer would sometimes follow behind. She was obviously shunned by the other deer and not allowed near them. She did not have any fawns.

Once when I was out duck hunting I came across her alone in a nearby aspen grove. She did not have the strength to run from me.There were mountain lions around and I decided against my wife’s wishes to finally kill it. But I couldn’t get a shot and tbh lacked the courage to do it

I did not see her again for months. I figured she was dead. But today I saw her. I could still see the bone coming out of her leg. She was again alone, still hobbling, but alive.

I’m not sure what lesson to draw from this.
