What are Mantras?

“Mantras” are made up of decibels stacked differently. It is based on the scientific theory that sound impacts. A mighty thunder could break a glass windowpane and similarly a lullaby could sooth an infant to sleep.

So the sound waves affect both the atmosphere outside as well as inside us.“Mantra” a Sanskrit expression has its root in “Mann” and Mann denotes ‘mind.’it came from its root “Manan” which means ‘churning’ because it is the nature of the mind that it churns and churns and churns

to ‘draw’ meaningful understanding and then to perform. Since Mantras are sound decibels, they may not always form meaningful texts and Rig Veda has several such Mantras.

Can bad Karma be cleared by chanting Mantras?

It is important to state here that the theory of Karma has a bearing on the concept of “re-birth.” Take an example of two infants; one is born in a slum while other in a Palace.

While one enjoys the happiness that the richness gives, the other undergoes various difficulties and pains that poverty offer. How come it is so, especially when these infants are yet to do any Karma?

The Law of Karma says that it is as a result of their respective Karma in their previous births! The fact of the matter is; we are what we are today in this physical world due to our Karma in the past birth (according to Hinduism) and it cannot be changed retrospectively!

Life, however, can be ‘changed’ but it can be changed only through actions and Mantras are not ‘actions.’ But they help mind to comprehend ‘true nature of things’ which in turn helps ‘The Self” within to take ‘appropriate actions.’

As mentioned above, ‘destiny’ is the sum total of all our actions accumulated and if we are able to change our actions wherever needed, we can change/improve our destiny…
