Happening now: 📺 The House Oversight Committee is holding a hearing on improving accountability + transparency in our government.

We’re especially excited about 3 topics it’ll cover:
1️⃣Inspectors general
2️⃣Whistleblowers
3️⃣Vacancies & acting officials

🕵️‍♂️Inspectors general identify waste, fraud & abuse across the federal gov’t, saving millions of 💵 per year.

But reforms are needed to protect IGs from political retaliation, ensure they’re empowered to follow the facts independently, + give Congress transparency for oversight.
Whistleblowers likewise notify authorities like Congress of wrongdoing across government.

Yet a lack of protections against retaliation + ways to vindicate their rights makes it harder for patriotic employees to blow the whistle on waste, fraud & abuse. thefulcrum.us/government-eth…
The Framers chose Senate confirmation of presidential appointees as another key way to keep our gov’t accountable to the people.

But in recent decades, presidents of both parties have bypassed Congress by relying increasingly on unconfirmed, acting officials they hand pick.
We applaud @RepMaloney & House Oversight for highlighting these important issues and the need for reform.

3 bills we support—the Whistleblower Protection Improvement Act, the IG Independence Act, and the Accountability for Acting Officials Act—would go a long way.
Those bills are all part of the Protecting Our Democracy Act, a suite of reforms aimed at curbing executive abuses and empowering Congress by strengthening accountability and transparency.

Today over 350 scholars of the filibuster, the Senate, and American democracy—including a dozen Pulitzer Prize winners—sent a letter to U.S. senators calling for filibuster reform. See the letter here, and read our thread below 🧵⬇️ medium.com/@Historians-Sc…
The letter argues that the Framers of the Constitution explicitly rejected supermajority thresholds for regular legislation in the wake of the Articles of Confederation, “which prescribed a supermajority for a variety of federal actions” and led to paralyzing gridlock.
As Alexander Hamilton warned in Federalist No. 22, minority vetoes in Congress would “destroy the energy of the government” by keeping it in “a state of inaction.”

[BREAKING] @JessicaDenson07 wins lawsuit over Trump campaign’s illegal NDAs. This is a huge victory for free speech & the American public’s right to hear the truth. protectdemocracy.org/resource-libra…
The Trump campaign required its workers—incl. volunteers—to sign unlimited NDAs that prohibit them from criticizing Donald Trump, his family, Trump businesses, and the Trump campaign—forever.
The Court has spoken: the Campaign’s form NDA that Jessica signed is invalid as a matter of law. The contract goes too far and is unenforceable. protectdemocracy.org/update/jessica…

In a report released yesterday, @DHSOIG concluded that the deployment of DHS agents to Portland and other protest sites this summer was illegal.

DHS agents are reportedly on alert to respond to post-election protests, but the OIG report strongly suggests that their deployment may be illegal, too.

Over the summer, DHS had 5,700 agents “designated” to respond to protests. None were lawfully designated to conduct those operations. washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07…

🚨NEW🚨 1,600+ frmr DOJ lawyers warn of possible elex interference from AG Barr, urge current DOJ personnel, including John Durham, to
1⃣report such misconduct
2⃣refuse participation
3⃣as a last result, "resign[] rather than violate their oaths of office." medium.com/@dojalumni/doj…
Rather than respecting DOJ policy and norms and staying away from anything political leading up to an election, Barr is trying to turn DOJ into an arm of Trump’s campaign. politico.com/news/2020/09/2…
The weaponization of DOJ for Trump’s political aims has come up prominently in the case of the Durham investigation. The DOJ alumni write: “There is clearly no justification for taking public action on it in such close proximity to the November election.” And AG Barr should know.
