ICYMI @stephenWalt for @ForeignPolicy
Our "vast military establishment is very effective at protecting the US homeland & deterring large-scale aggression... It is not very good at running other countries & remaking them in its image" foreignpolicy.com/2021/04/28/wha…
@stephenWalt
"The most important task is addressing climate change.
..flooded coastlines, millions displaced, whole regions uninhabitable, trillions of dollars of lost wealth -- would make the problems the FP community has been fretting about for the past 25 years seem trivial"
@stephenWalt
"The other critical issue is China.. In purely geopolitical terms, China is the most serious competitor the US has faced since it became a great power..
having lots of allies is not an asset if most of them are weak, hard to control, and difficult to defend"
"The US must also cooperate w/ China.. the surest way to screw this up is to treat Sino-American relations as a life-or-death struggle btw 2 alternative models of capitalism & to make toppling of the Chinese Communist Party its ultimate objective"
(Ok, just read the piece)
Ok one more ☝️
@stephenWalt: Don't take on China & Russia together
"Geopolitics 101: In a multipolar world, encouraging the other poles to combine against you is just plain dumb.. A less paranoid relationship would be in Europe’s interest, Russia’s interest & US interest too"
I lied, here's 1 more (too many gems) 💎
"If Beijing can trade, invest & negotiate w/ Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia & the UAE why can’t DC? Talking to everyone would encourage these countries to be more attentive to our wishes instead of enabling them to take US support for granted"
OK end of article
"To sum up: Ending the current 'forever wars' is not enough.. requires understanding how they came about & why they failed & then developing a positive agenda for US foreign policy that internalizes these lessons & recognizes what US power can & cannot achieve"

As I explained on @AJArabic, int'l diplomats continue to insist that the Houthis give up all weapons & territory acquired, in accordance w/ UN Sec Council Resolution 2216
The Houthis feel they are winning: they have no reason to agree to these terms
If @StateDept_NEA Special Envoy Lenderking is serious about helping to facilitate an end to the violence, he cannot allow the Saudis & the Hadi gov to continue to use starvation as a weapon of war
UN Sec Council Resolution 2216 justifies the blockade -- it should be replaced
The Saudi/Hadi blockade empowers the Houthis:
- Affirms Houthi narrative that they protect Yemen from foreign threats
- Consolidates Houthi control over resources by preventing Yemen's economy from functioning
The Houthis are good at war: they'll be less good at peace
"I strongly condemn Houthi actions in both Yemen and Saudi Arabia... Their trampling of human rights... Their assault on Marib is pouring fuel on the conflict...
The Houthis must commit to a ceasefire"
@RepTedDeutch introduces the witnesses, two of whom are calling from Yemen:
@WSJopinion reveals yet again their lack of concern for human life
Anyone who argues that the Foreign Terrorist Designation on the Houthis should have remained in place is arguing for the starvation of the millions of Yemenis living under Houthi control 1/ wsj.com/articles/joe-b…
A reporter in Sanaa for @newlinesmag interviewed a small business owner, who expressed relief: “The designation was like an execution by hanging for my business."
The currency crisis since 2016 has already pushed many Yemenis to the brink of starvation newlinesmag.com/reportage/yeme…
2/
It is possible to condemn the Houthis' many abuses while also acknowledging the reality of their control & the necessity of engaging with them in order to address the suffering of Yemenis
To restart diplomacy, the Houthis cannot be labeled "terrorists" 3/ responsiblestatecraft.org/2021/02/06/bid…
