#TheMitchellsVsTheMachines watch party begins!
We all wanted Katie to own this movie right up front and this Columbia logo sets the tone for the movie and Katie Mitchell’s aesthetic #MvMwatchparty
Katie drinks “Mountain Rush” soda. In college while making student films, Phil and I would consume a case of Mountain Dew a night. One night we bought caffeinated water (called “Javaqua”) and then made coffee with it. #MvMwatchparty
There is a wooden etched sign above the door in the kitchen that says “NO SCREENS AT THE TABLE” but like at my own household, nobody follows it
Look at how painterly and watercolory this world is! Amazing rendering work by @mlasker and team! #MvMwatchparty
“PRANCER BELONGS TO THE CANYON NOW!” Is the most expensive shot in the movie. Needed a mule rig and water sim etc. It was something the bean counters kept asking “you sure you want to spend this for just one joke?”
Yes. #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines#mvmwatchparty
I ❤️@michaelrianda & @lindseydraws idea to give Katie The Shining socks. It tickled me the first time I saw it. I tried to get The Shining wallpaper in our bathroom but my wife would only let us do it if it was in a different color so it wasn’t creepy #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines
You may remember from the first “Connected” trailer the original line in the port a potty was “no time to wash your hands” “I never do” and post-Covid it seemed irresponsible so it became “false alarm I was just in there reading” which I think is funnier #mvmwatchparty
Script guru and all-around genius Lindsay Doran pointed out if they stabbed the Mitchells’ car tire in the mall, they’d need to get a new one. So the mall tire store (not the biggest logic stretch in the film) in boards was called DORAN TIRES (& plot hole repair) #mvmwatchparty
The idea Katie had from her “Dope Plan” notebook to find a “kill code” was supposed to be a pastiche of movie clichés like in, um... all of our other movies #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines#mvmwatchparty
DEREGULATE TAPIOCA is a window into the insane and hilarious minds of the @JollyLads - Doug and Todd - editor/writer/mayhem artists who worked with us on The Lego Movie and Lego Batman and Spider-Verse. #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines#mvmwatchparty
These credits always make me tear up. Thanks for watching along and thanks to the amazing crew of humans who made this very special film! #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines#MvMWatchParty

I’m going to point out some details you may have missed in shots from #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines trailer to show how @michaelrianda & team created a film with such groundbreaking visuals. A thread!
Mike wanted the film to have a hand-painted watercolor style so we brought @mlasker - a genius from the Spider-Verse team - to use some of the techniques developed on S-V to give this movie its own look. Some examples:
Look closely at the texture on the fur collar of Rick Mitchell (the dad)‘s jacket. Instead of super realistic detailed fur simulation, it’s a bunch of hand-painted squiggles. Which is actually much harder to pull off.
