🧵- I woke up to missed calls from my step mom. She wanted me to know that the ESMAD (riot squad) had surrounded her complex in response to protests in the park next door. But that she was ok. #ColombiaNeedsHelp#noalaReformaTributaria2021#NosEstanMatando
My uncle was a photojournalist during Operación Orion. During the 80’s and early 90’s my father and other members of my family where threatened and even disappeared for days by the militarized police. This is all too familiar for me and many of us who left Colombia.
What’s happening back home isn’t new. Colombia’s history of oppressing the working poor and engaging in civil rights violations against those who speak up is as old as the country itself.
These pics where taken by my cousin @AfrogodMatheo, who has been on the ground in Medellin documenting the peaceful protests & tells me women are reporting being raped by the militarized police, peaceful protestors shot & disappeared (w/the excuse that it’s an anti-guerrilla op)
Want to understand what’s happening? Why people are indignant? Here’s a good explanation.
Raise your voice, international pressure is mounting and President @IvanDuque has a duty to protect our people. The tax reform targets the poor, there is no question about it. The response cannot be to kill our people.
#SCOTUS#DACADecision thread: Many of you know my story, but for those of you who don't, I came to this country at the age of 9 from Colombia and lived for 13 years as an undocumented youth.
Like many DREAMers, my mother brought me to this country for a better life, far from the economic hardships and violent realities in our homeland.
We spent much of my childhood living in the shadows, knowing that the system was stacked against us. Each day we faced the fear that immigration enforcement could tear our family apart at any moment, for simply trying to survive. When @BarackObama enacted the #DACA program.
