Dear @KSSKhawaii, I have been listening to your morning news show with @PerryAndPosse (and Price, RIP) since kindergarten. I've always adored the show, and it stoked a lot of curiosity in me as a student. 1/n
This morning, @PerryAndPosse started a news segment recapping that @GovHawaii had given a briefing saying that there would be no official changes to COVID policies because cases are "stuck at a high level." 2/n
@PerryAndPosse went on to say "Cases? What do we care about cases? Are hospitals full? ICUs full?" (Good question: @CovidActNow data that statewide ICUs are at 55%, but on the Big Island they are *full*, and there's insufficient data for surging Kauai and high-case Maui.) 3/n
He went on to wave this vague and unexplored "and you know, a lot of it is about testing, and testing is sketchy". Maybe, @PerryAndPosse, you meant that cases might have gone up just because testing has increased? Our statewide test positivity rate has shot back above 2% . 4/n
He took his rant to a peak with "I know covid raged through the elderly and then the obese, and some other populations, but for the rest of us, it's just a virus." Statistically, those "other populations" are minorities and the poor. Aha, sovery "not us" to @perryandposse. 5/n
Cases. Why do we care about cases? 1 of these cases that @perryandposse wants you to gloss over was a 37yo, healthy, productive and adored friend that @rmichaelmoore and I just lost to COVID. The hospital he went to wasn't "overloaded". It just wasn't enough. He died. 6/n
@perryandposse spent the rest of the @KSSKhawaii segment ranting and raving with no concrete foundation pulled in, incl about now disproven fears like "precautions causing more damage than they prevent." So after 32 years, I am removing 92.3 from my station list altogether. n/n
