Well -- I have gone all the way back to October in looking at the headlines of the premier political reporter for the Brampton Guardian. I can't see many stories because of Torstar's paywall but I haven't come across a single one in that period of time that focuses on racism...
I dunno. It seems to me that there'd be any number of COVID or city council stories through which to analyze through a lens of white supremacy.

In this article, which is very in-depth, it takes to paragraph *26* to get to the part about racism: bramptonguardian.com/news-story/103…
Seems like a story about a racialized city worker who alleged corruption, racism and nepotism against a white establishment would mention racism earlier, and be more precise than what's here. (I burned my free articles to look at this issue).
So, yeah, my theory for why Graeme was so intent on misreading what I had written about The Current, such that he made it sound like Brampton Guardian staff should expect to face violence over my tweets, is correct.

This is reporting that doesn't *at all* engage with race...
...in one of Canada's most diverse and important economic cities.

I would say "do better" but I wouldn't want that to be construed as a threat as well.

I hadn't planned on looking but alas. Now time to do some COVID data collection.
@sandela I think we should do a hometown proud segment this week

Because my upcoming book focuses on how media reported (explained, analyzed, advocate, hid, obscured etc.) the pandemic, it was really important for me to look at the articles I used. Here is a thread about my sources.
After removing all non-journalism from my sources, I was left with 559 citations.

209 - white men
167 - white women
53 - racialized women
33 - racialized men
1 - non binary person

No wonder reporting about covid ignored race so often...
(And icy are wondering, where there were multiple names on a byline, I used the first author to categorize them).

Now that leaves ... 80 pieces without a byline, which I think is such a shame.

Of the 24,396 people who have died from COVID-19 in Canada, I've linked 16,921 deaths to 1668 residential facilities. That is an increase of 4 deaths since last night with one new facility added.

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
Toronto's shelter deaths continue to climb. There are great activists tracking these deaths far closer than I so look out for them on Twitter if you're curious.

And ...
Things in Alberta have massively shifted (as the vaccines would shift, as we knew) -- it used to be that if there were a bunch of deaths, most would be linked to an outbreak. Today, of the 9 deaths in that province, none was. Now ..

A segment on Brampton that does not put racism front and centre will not tell the real story.

The fight for a better hospital, and the fight against a P3 hospital, the mega youth jail, the incredible housing prices and overcrowding in suburban homes ...
the scorn that Queen's Park has for Brampton and the war between Patrick Brown and Doug Ford ... WHERE IS ANY OF THIS.
Talk about Bill Davis and his role in sinking new rapid public transit and talk about how it takes more than an hour to drive from Brampton to Mississauga at rush-hour and how the white media has ignored Peel Region systemically.

Ok -- so The Current does a deep dive into how COVID has impacted Brampton in segment one. Segment two should then seek to identify who needs to be pitchforked over creating these conditions, right? Let's listen...
... they start with Brooks Fallis, because no segment on The Current can be without a doctor. We just wouldn't believe the seriousness otherwise!
"Who are the patients you're treating?"

A question that we have already covered in the first segment. I'm getting the sense that blame isn't going to be placed ...

After four weeks of schools being closed in the Quebec City region, we head back tomorrow.

Case totals today (87) are as low as they were last on March 26. Schools closed on April 1. The tendency is definitely trending in the right direction.
Vaccines are at 300,000 as of today as well -- more than triple where were were around about March 26. That's such great news too.

And, businesses are staying shut, kids are wearing masks full-time.
Compared to where we were back in January, there are far fewer active cases (1754 vs. about 1200), a few dozen fewer cases in my neighbourhood but far more workplace outbreaks (not including LTC).

Let's talk about Canada's quarantine exemption rules. With all the attention on banning flights from India (and not from everywhere else), we are ignoring a very important problem -- our quarantine rules are full of exemptions. Here they are:
1. Medical exemptions: if you come to Canada for a medical treatment that happens within 36 hours of your arrival, you can be exempt. (The way this is written sounds like you have to be supervised by a doctor for 14 days, but it also could only be for people who are COVID+)
2. Student in a health field - you are exempt if you come to Canada if you are coming to Canada as part of your studies. You are not allowed to care for someone 65+ within 14 days of arriving (extremely tight restriction...)
