In the past 48 hours, social media has been packed with pictures and videos of the post-poll violence in West Bengal.

More than 14 people have reportedly been killed and all the political parties have claimed that their cadres have been attacked.

thewire.in/politics/west-…
While all the opposition parties claim that their cadres have been attacked by TMC workers, the BJP has unleashed a social media storm of misleading posts, unverifiable pictures and inflammatory rumours.

thewire.in/politics/west-…
In such a tense situation, unchecked fake news mixed with communal incitement and Islamophobic propaganda by the BJP and its supporters will only add fuel to the fire. | @asfreeasjafri reports

In March last year, the residents of Gampur village in Chhattisgarh dug a pit to make a “protective space” to preserve the body of 22 yo Badru Madvi.

He was killed in a “joint operation” by the Central and state reserve forces. | @sukanyashantha

thewire.in/rights/bastar-…
@sukanyashantha Embalmed in salt, oil and various medicinal herbs, the villagers had unanimously decided to preserve Badru’s body.

Much of his remains have now decomposed, leaving behind just a weary skeleton wrapped in soiled clothes.

thewire.in/rights/bastar-…
@sukanyashantha On March 19, 2020, at 6.30 am, Badru had left home to collect the seasonal mahua flowers.

A little after 7 am, villagers heard a loud thud.

Badru was shot dead, just a few metres away from his home.

"The political options that people have been in search of that door has been opened because of the Bengal elections. We expected it in Tamil Nadu, Kerala - but in Bengal..." | @svaradarajan talks about what today's #ElectionResults mean.

@svaradarajan "...For Bengal to stand its ground, and voters to decide that they would not let themselves, their society to be divided by religion... to not just save its government but to bring a magnificent win.

This is by itself a message on a national scale."

@svaradarajan .@svaradarajan recalls that when Mamata Banerjee put out a message calling for the opposition to unite against the BJP on a national level, Modi responded to say that Mamata has realised she's lost the Bengal elections....

Watch The Wire analysis of the #ElectionResults with @MitaliLive in conversation with @AjoyAshirwad @sangbarooahpish, @svaradarajan @bombaywallah and @mkvenu1!

@MitaliLive @AjoyAshirwad @sangbarooahpish @svaradarajan @bombaywallah @mkvenu1 .@mkvenu1 : Mamata Banerjee changed her strategy after BJP's incursion into Bengal...is Congress willing to do things that are different from what they've done in the past.

@MitaliLive @AjoyAshirwad @sangbarooahpish @svaradarajan @bombaywallah @mkvenu1 .@mkvenu1 : Prashant Kishor's theory is that BJP has consistently dropped vote share in all assembly elections compared to the vote share it got in 2019 in different state. That's a consistent pattern.

Time may have passed, but our leaders’ understanding of how this virus spreads and what measures need to be taken to curb it does not seem to be benefitting from science, the experiences before them or even common sense.
thewire.in/politics/bjp-l…
As reports of scarcity for oxygen supply pour in, Union minister Piyush Goyal thinks state governments are to blame as they aren’t “controlling” demand enough.

His remarks were widely criticised and #TooMuchOxygen began to trend on Twitter.

thewire.in/politics/bjp-l…
While campaigning for the West Bengal elections, Modi recently said that he has “never seen such huge crowds” at a rally. The leader did not seem to care that during a pandemic of this kind, a crowd is basically the worst possible thing.

The SC has closed the suo motu case initiated after serious sexual harassment allegations were levelled against then CJI Ranjan Gogoi in 2019.

This despite the fact that Justice Nariman, who was on the bench that heard the case before, is still at the SC.
thewire.in/law/supreme-co…
Gogoi is now a member of the Rajya Sabha.

His nomination was criticised because of the sexual harassment allegations against him, as well as because it was seen as ‘quid pro quo’ by the Narendra Modi govt for several pro-govt rulings during his time.

thewire.in/law/supreme-co…
The bench said that “two years have passed and possibility of recovery of electronic evidence now is unlikely”.
