An Ohio voting 🧵 for you. Yesterday I was offered a provisional ballot, first because of my driver’s license expiration date, and then because my former address is on my driver’s license. 1/
I declined (no reason to hassle volunteer poll workers about Ohio’s anti-voter laws and practices) and asked the presiding judge to call the board to check the rules. 2/
I knew that my license is still valid until July 1, 2021 because of a law passed in response to the pandemic. 3/
And I knew that since 2006 when Ohio began asking voters for physical IDs, you are able to show a valid driver’s license with a former address. When you purchase a license, it's valid for at least four years. 4/
After the phone call I was able to vote with a regular ballot, but how many people would have known to push back? I’m an attorney with in-depth knowledge of Ohio’s voting laws, including why voters should or shouldn't be asked to vote a provisional ballot. 5/
Unfortunately I'm not surprised to see this report showing that Ohio pushes more people to provisional ballots than almost any other state, and in 2020 the rate of rejecting those Ohioans' ballots increased. 6/

Let's come together to create a process where every Ohioan and American can safely and freely cast their ballot. Let's support the #ForThePeople Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. 7/7
