Cliff Slaughter, who between 1957 and 1985 played a leading role in the International Committee of the Fourth International and its British section, died Monday at the age of 92. The WSWS will soon publish a more extensive and critical review review of Slaughter's life. 1/
It is well-known that Slaughter broke irrevocably with Trotskyism in 1986 and that the remaining 35 years of his political life consisted of a shameful repudiation of Trotskyist politics and its Marxist foundations. 2/
However, in noting his death, the ICFI must call attention to the significant role that Slaughter played in the fight for Trotskyism in the earlier period of his life. 3/
Slaughter's most important contributions as a Marxist and Trotskyist are, undoubtedly, the documents that he wrote in the 1960s in opposition to the American Socialist Workers Party's betrayal of Trotskyism and its 1963 reunification with the Pabloite United Secretariat. 4/
In "Trotskyism Betrayed," "Lenin on Dialectics," (both 1962) and "Opportunism and Empiricism" (1963) Slaughter defended permanent revolution against the Pabloite capitulation to Castroism and other petty-bourgeois movements. 5/
Slaughter exposed the reactionary political implications of the Pabloite claim that Castro was an "unconscious Marxist." Slaughter -- defending the Leninist theory of the Party -- insisted that revolutionary consciousness had to be brought into the working class. 6/
This task, Slaughter insisted, could only be achieved through the resolution of the crisis of revolutionary leadership, i.e., the building of the Fourth International. He wrote in 1963: 7/
"For Marxists the crisis of the old leadership expresses its bankruptcy from the standpoint of the proletariat and therefore the urgent need to develop a new leadership ... a party of a new type, the Bolshevik Party, which is the prime need in all countries ..." 8/
Slaughter exposed the connection between Pabloite opportunism and its "objectivist" falsification of Marxism, which claimed that the crisis of capitalism is so great that it will enable the working class to conquer power even in the absence of a Trotskyist leadership. 9/
Rejecting objectivism, a theoretical justification for opportunism, Slaughter wrote: 10/
"There can be no concession on this point. The test of any Marxist's devotion to the construction of the International as the only leadership of the proletarian revolution will be his insistent work for the construction of the revolutionary party in each country." 11/
Slaughter dismissed claims that petty-bourgeois nationalist movements, allied with Stalinist regimes in the USSR or China, could serve as a substitute for the building of the world Trotskyist movement, based on the working class, as "reactionary twaddle." 12/
Slaughter continued to defend the perspective of the Fourth International throughout the 1960s. However, the opportunist drift of the Socialist Labour League -- which in 1973 became the Workers Revolutionary Party -- found expression in Slaughter's writings. 13/
In 1972, Slaughter wrote that the "struggle against idealist ways of thought was necessary which went much deeper than questions of agreement on program and policy." This formula served to deflect attention from the WRP's Pabloite adaptation to bourgeois nationalist regimes. 14/
Slaughter misused his prestige as the ICFI's foremost theoretician to legitimize and promote WRP leader Gerry Healy's blatantly idealist falsification of Marxism and opportunism. He worked to suppress the differences raised by the Workers League between 1982 and 1984. 15/
Slaughter bears immense responsibility for the devastating crisis that erupted within the WRP in 1985. He worked to prevent an analysis of the political and theoretical issues underlying the crisis in the WRP, and, thereby, promote a break with the ICFI and Trotskyism. 16/
The remaining decades of Slaughter's long life constituted a complete repudiation of all that he had fought for during the years that he had defended Trotskyism against Stalinism and Pabloism. His conduct, on both a political and personal level, was reprehensible. 17/
But it is not only the evil that men do that lives after them. The International Committee of the Fourth International, in opposing Slaughter's political betrayal, upheld all that was significant in his earlier contributions. 18/

In the aftermath of Chauvin's conviction, the official narrative promoted by the Biden administration and media is that police violence is directed almost exclusively against the Black population in the United States. This race-based narrative is contradicted by statistics. 1/
This bar graph [created by Statista] shows the demographic distribution of police killings in the United States since 2017. The total number of people killed by police from 1/1/2017 to 3/31/2021 is 4171, an absolutely staggering number. 2/
Of the 4171 victims,
*1733 [41.5%] were non-Hispanic whites
*908 [21.8%] were Black
*654 [15.7%] were Hispanic
*148 [3.5%] were listed as Other
*728 [17.5%] were listed as Unknown

Fantasizing about a rebirth of a progressive American liberalism -- which died of old age in 1917 -- @jbouie invokes in today's NY Times Roosevelt's New Deal as "the lodestar for liberals and the left alike, from Joe Biden to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez." 1/
This mythologized lodestar would be better described as an intellectual and political deadweight. As far back as the 1930s, John Dewey -- trying to adapt liberalism to economic realities -- understood enough to know that serious social reform was incompatible with capitalism. 2/
Dewey called attention to the basic flaw in Roosevelt's program: "Invoking the profit motive to provide employment is a confession of impotency, since the quest for profits -- as rent, interest and gains on invested capital --is the cause of unemployment and poverty." 3/

.@DSA leaders are incensed by @EricLondonSEP's exposure of the RWDSU's Amazon debacle and the duplicity of AOC. Trying to disorient honest DSA members, they vilify the SEP/WSWS's opposition to the Democrats and union bureaucracy as anti-labor. 1/
The authors of these slanders [like .@TheDuhalde] have no history of involvement in any struggles of the working class. They have built their opportunist careers within, and as agents of, American capitalism's vast institutional superstructure of class oppression. 2/
Many of the leaders of the SEP (formerly the Workers League), who also write for the WSWS, have an extensively documented history of direct involvement in the struggles of the working class (within the US and internationally), that spans between four and five decades. 3/

Predictably, the middle-class pseudo-left are acting as attorneys for the RWDSU executives, concocting excuses for the Amazon debacle. The crybabies from "Left Voice" claim that the RDWSU was confronted with a "David versus Goliath" struggle against the corporate titan. /1
They write: "Amazon invested in an epic anti-union campaign, spending more than $10,000 a day to stop the unionization effort." Over a period of six months (180 days), that comes to $1.8 million. The annual combined salary package of top nine RWDSU officials is $1.98 million. /2
The union disburses another president $6 million annually to the rest of its staff. The problem was not a lack of money. The AFL-CIO is a multi-billion dollar business with vast resources. The RWDSU offered no program to rally workers' support. /3

199 Minutes [three hours and 19 minutes] -- that is how long it took before the Pentagon authorized the deployment of national guard troops to the Capitol building. Can anyone seriously believe that this was an innocent procedural error? A failure to "connect the dots"? 1/4
Just picture what was going on inside the Pentagon on January 6: Like everyone else in the country, the Pentagon brass and staff were glued to CNN, watching events unfold on Capitol Hill. Are we to really believe that no one said, "We better do something!" 2/4
Clearly, Trump's people in the Defense Department and within the Joint Chiefs were giving the militarily-trained elements directing the riot enough time to take hostages, effectively secure control of Capitol Hill and shut down Congress. The coup nearly succeeded. 3/4

On January 14, 1977 leading Pabloites held a London rally, chaired by Tariq Ali, to defend the "honor" of Sylvia Caldwell, Sheldon Harte, and Joseph Hansen. Documents have since proven that all three collaborated with the Stalinist GPU.
Assembled on the "Platform of Shame" alongside Tariq Ali were Ernest Mandel, Pierre Lambert and Tim Wohlforth. Denouncing Healy for two hours, none of them addressed the facts relating to Stalinist attacks on the Fourth International.
There were 2,000 people at the rally. Gerry Healy entered the hall accompanied by only three others comrades from the Workers Revolutionary Party. After the speakers on the Platform completed their two hours of denunciation, Healy raised his hand to speak.
