I decided to stay in bed later. Woke up to The Current who, for like the thousandth time, has an American on to talk about anti-vaccines and the far right.

Why is the CBC so afraid of hearing a Canadian talk about this?
We can hear about Alabama and Mississippi till the cows come home and yet never will this lens be placed on Alberta or regions like Alymer, Lethbridge or how involved Canadian police have been in these movements.
Like not talking about white supremacy in this discussion misses such a big part of it. And ever reference to Russia as driving this could have been replaced with Canadian far-right activism.

Toronto's largest outbreak right now is at the Amazon distribution warehouse.
There's also a 22-person outbreak at a Public Heath Ontario Labratory, 13-person outbreak at Rogers Communications Inc. (who knows which one), 32 people out a Purolator and 23 people sick at Canada Goose (making essential service expensive jackets)
Ellis Don is the company with the most active outbreaks.

The Current turning into CBC's premier podcast advertising agency is pretty annoying.
You marry the same producer at the CBC and then you both dicorce? You'll get on the air!
I'm sure this podcast is captivating but an advertorial isn't news.

Of the 24,450 people who have died from COVID-19, I've linked 17,373 deaths to 1685 residential care facilities -- that is a big jump from last night -- 456 deaths -- thanks mostly to reporting from Radio-Canada docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
Through freedom to information, journalists got a list of how many people have died in Quebec at hospital outbreaks. We had some of that already but this list was massive -- a lot of deaths that had not yet been reported. So now, they're here.
Reporting on COVID-19 infections and deaths linked to hospital outbreaks has been sketchy at best, depending on the province. Manitoba is the only province that has been giving this information out steadily. Considering that they're all highly regulated public bodies ...

Because my upcoming book focuses on how media reported (explained, analyzed, advocate, hid, obscured etc.) the pandemic, it was really important for me to look at the articles I used. Here is a thread about my sources.
After removing all non-journalism from my sources, I was left with 559 citations.

209 - white men
167 - white women
53 - racialized women
33 - racialized men
1 - non binary person

No wonder reporting about covid ignored race so often...
(And icy are wondering, where there were multiple names on a byline, I used the first author to categorize them).

Now that leaves ... 80 pieces without a byline, which I think is such a shame.

Of the 24,396 people who have died from COVID-19 in Canada, I've linked 16,921 deaths to 1668 residential facilities. That is an increase of 4 deaths since last night with one new facility added.

Toronto's shelter deaths continue to climb. There are great activists tracking these deaths far closer than I so look out for them on Twitter if you're curious.

And ...
Things in Alberta have massively shifted (as the vaccines would shift, as we knew) -- it used to be that if there were a bunch of deaths, most would be linked to an outbreak. Today, of the 9 deaths in that province, none was. Now ..
