NEW from me & @robertanglen: Far-right groups help recruit ballot counters for Arizona audit

azcentral.com/story/news/pol… @azcentral
One recruiter is a retired police officer who works as an investigator for an extremist right-wing group that warns of "the growing threat of the Marxist and the Islamic movement in America."
Another person involved in recruitment used her brief stint as the county Republican Party chairwoman to try to "get Trump back in office" by protesting the results of one of the county's prior audits. That's Linda, mentioned here.
Much more about the Republican efforts to recruit ballot counters for the Arizona audit is in the story, for subscribers only.

I have many updates to share after talking to Senate Liaison Ken Bennett. Here we go ...

First update, he says they are approaching 210,000 ballots counted. #azauditpool
John Brakey said that there is an independent journalist named Steve Rosenfeld on the audit floor. Bennett confirmed that.

Asked why they had different access then the rest of the journalists, Bennett said I got to go on the floor... I pointed out that others ...
hadn't had the chance. "We allowed him to go on the floor for a few hours like we allowed other people to do in the beginning."

No other response.

Watch here today, as I’m the pool reporter for the Arizona audit this morning!

Shift starts at 8 am but I’m late because I forgot to eat breakfast (mom probs) so stopped somewhere real quick! #azauditpool
I’m here, at what the New York Times called the ‘decrepit local coliseum’ #azauditpool

NEW: One of the largest looming questions around Arizona's election audit is who all is involved --- and how they got involved.

We are starting to connect the dots.

Here's my story w/ @andrewoxford, for subscribers only.

And THREAD ...
azcentral.com/story/news/pol…
1. Doug Logan.

CEO of Cyber Ninjas, firm running the audit. A little history. (He says his bias doesn't matter because he won't be touching the ballots)
2. John Brakey.

A Tucson guy who says he is trying to make this audit fair and transparent by getting a seat at the table.

About the auditing Maricopa County has already done...

Rumor: No hand count done
Truth: Hand count of statistically significant # of ballots

Rumor: Only did a logic & accuracy test on voting machines
Truth: Hired firms to examine if machines were hacked/connected to internet
Results:

Hand counts by county.

Performed by appointees of all major political parties.

Anthony Kern, a former state lawmaker who was at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 when rioters disrupted Congress, is among the people helping to count and inspect Maricopa County ballots. azcentral.com/story/news/pol… @azcentral
He has served as a counter several days so far. I spotted him on the first day of the audit when I was serving as an observer.

I walked up and asked him to talk to me about why he wanted to serve as a counter. He agreed to talk until someone reminded him he signed an NDA. Image
Via @andrewboxford & @utilityreporter, media was told Cyber Ninjas was screening counters for ‘strong opinions.’ Image

Alright, everyone, I did it.

I wrote an entire story about the UV flashlights and what the auditors could be looking for on Maricopa County ballots.

All of the theories, unpacked, here: azcentral.com/story/news/pol… @azcentral
But also: It appears that they stopped using the UV light at some point today. Maria was the pool reporter in the afternoon.
Maria was kicked out of her approved shift early tonight. It looks like it was hopefully just a miscommunication. Well, several miscommunications, over and over and over again.
