Earlier this year, I worked on a story about a Cambodian Muslim family fishing and living on the banks of the #MekongRiver in #PhnomPenh. After the big storm last night, I went to check how they were doing reuters.com/article/us-mek…
Tin Yusos, the fisherman we followed, told me the winds this year have been much stronger than in the past -- strong enough to flip boats over. Yusos's family was ok, but several boats in their community of 18 families were completely flooded last night.
Boat motors broke, clothes, rice, and school books all soaked by water. One family I spoke to lost $100 of their cash savings. Those who contribute the least to #climatechange are often the most devastatingly impacted
These 18 families will receive some emergency food assistance soon thanks to a local fundraising initiative. I would also like to gather some funds for a cash donation to each family, especially bc they are also celebrating Ramadan. If you'd like to contribute, please DM me 🙏🏻
