It was Alexander D. Campbell and Francis Whyte Ellis, collector of madras who refuted and said Tamil and were not from Sanskrit.their book “ Grammar of the teloogoo language” (1816) argues that Tamil and Telugu had common non Sanskrit ancestors.

He went on to become the Bishop of Tirunelvali and worth the most infamous book “ A political and General History of The district of Tirunelveli (1881), published by east India company madras presidency.
His established the theological foundation that Dravidian separatism from Hinduism, backed by the church. And backed by the Christian usurpation of classical art and literature of Ancient Tamils. 80 years later a statue was erected for him in Chennai.
He intensely studied Tamil literature and praised them and projected that Tami culture is totally diffrent from the rest of India. This lay foundation to Tamil racists politics.
He demonised kural and saiva siddantha and essentialised Dravidians by constructing their racial “ others “ as Brahmins. Through this manipulation, the Brahmins were made into colonisers while actual colonisers like Caldwell were projected as saviour of Tamils.
Since then the propaganda to construct ethnic religious group “Tamil religion” by blaming the Brahmins is in progress. The rabid pressure to establish the Christian identity to Tamils has been in full force.
EVR, Anna, Karunanidhi saw this as an opportunity and took this already sold idea as their political ideology, which to this day DMK identifies fiercely as anti- Brahmin.
