Twitter is the worst platform for sharing music. For copyright reasons, I’m limited largely to reposting clips people have already shared.

So, this is a hodge-podge of a thread... and it won’t do justice to the artist... but this is Bella White.

1/
We get hung up on genres. We should just listen to music without worrying about what box it fits into.

Bella White is a poignant singer-songwriter. Her songs feel timeless.

2/

Her album, Just Like Leaving, is music for wide-plank floors and country inns and breakfasts of homemade preserves on warm toast.

3/

The first time I persuaded Bella to play a short livestream, a few people joined on my say-so expecting it to not be their cup of tea.

They left as Bella White fans.

She is easy to like.

4/

I get nothing for singing Bella’s praises. I don’t know her personally. I don’t get paid for this.

What I get is a deep satisfaction of having helped a young artist and people who would like them to find each other.

5/
Music discovery is a thrill.

Finding a diamond - someone who’s music you love and whose career you care to follow - is rare and special.

Tonight, Bella is playing a livestream on Instagram at 8:00 ET.

I would like it if you came.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mom who has ever made their kids a hot breakfast but not eaten their own until was cold.

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms who put their kids first.

1/ Image
Biological or adoptive; parent or stepparent; a mother is the one who shows up - no matter what the birth certificate says.

If you are that kid’s shoulder, a parent they trust who comes through and cares, who hurts when they hurt and takes joy in their joy, you are a mom.

2/
A mom isn’t someone who just performs tasks; a mom is someone who loves from way down deep and who shows it.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms who don’t just perform the function but instead inhabit the role.

Broad also established The Broad Academy which churned out a string of disastrous, incompetent public education administrators who wreaked havoc on large public school districts.

And while everyone is praising Broad, his Academy’s model was somewhere between ignorant and racist.
Broad’s attempts to hijack control of public ed. by churning out unqualified disciples was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster for city after city.

Yeah, sorry, let’s not anoint a rich guy for being a patron of the arts while also doing harm to disadvantaged schools.
Oof, haven’t thought about this in years. Totally brought back the pitched, vitriolic battle in my town over his disciple’s “improvements.”

At one pt, thanks to Broad’s “teach to the test” obsession with standardized testing, my son had six straight periods of math and English.

I’m going to gush about Kasey Anderson this week. You might as well just surrender to that tide.

Kasey writes and sings from way down in the belly where hard things roll and boil.

I booked Kasey for a Thursday night livestream because that’s a how I want to attend.

1/
Anderson is based out in Oregon. I’m outside of New York.

It would be a good long while before I’d be able to catch him live.

Now, I get to hear him live Thursday night on his Instagram feed.

These little online sessions are just so great. They feel like private audiences.
2/
Anyway, enough gushing for now.

That song above, it’s called “Exit Ghost”.

Kasey has recorded a couple versions. My favorite is the acoustic off of the Garden Sessions EP.

Find it here:

My son headed off with his other parent after soccer this morning.

So, I have a combo of a dull melancholy, a surplus of time, and a full pint of Guinness on my hands.

Consider yourself seated next to me at the pub.

This is your chance to move quietly away before I go on.

1/
Still here. Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This is likely to get more sentimental than a Hallmark Christmas movie. I will offer no apology for that.

My son and I went fishing this week. It was the latest installment of a tradition dating back to when he was six.

2/
I have written about this before.

I cherish this outing. It is loaded with history and meaning for me.

It is a fleeting annual opportunity to add one small golden row to the tapestry of my son’s childhood.

It isn’t a fishing trip as much as it is a day of little rituals.

So, I met a man today who was taking pictures at a botanical garden next to where I parked to take a phone call.

In his late 60s, retired. Photographer as a hobby. Knows what he’s doing though. That was obvious from his gear.

So we started talking photography.

1/
Over the years, he has entered his pictures in local competitions. Swept 1st, 2nd and 3rd in one. Won an array of other awards.

And he isn’t online. At all. Doesn’t trust the internet with his info.

So, he takes amazing pictures and just... prints them.

2/
Two years ago, his girlfriend passed away. He sort of lost his way a little and is just starting to get back out into the world.

His eyesight is faltering. He has diabetes. Getting around is getting harder.

My son has a soccer game in a couple hours. He plays in a travel league. His team is made up of a great group of kids. It has been an absolute joy.

Lately, my son has been signaling that this may be his last year.

1/
The road is diverging. Kids who are hardcore into soccer are going in one direction and kids who just enjoy being on a competitive team are going another.

He might change his mind. We’ll see.

I will support his decision no matter what.

2/
But knowing that we may be nearing the end of his youth soccer days, each of these soccer Saturdays rests on me with a little more specialness, a little more meaning.

I am fully present for them with the wakefulness of someone who knows to capture it all, for it is fading.
