totally late on this but i watched 3 minutes of Shadow and Bone and good god it's the most clumsy writing of racism that I've ever seen,, like seriously HITTING YOU OVER THE HEAD about it. it makes me SO uncomfortable that it's hard to continue
what really gets me is i could be experiencing this same exact story without having to see shit like this every other minute
ok didn't expect to be this upset but i am because it's SO HEAVY HANDED, all while I'm hyper aware that it won't lead to any in-depth exploration of racism and racial dynamics bc Alina was white in the original story. her race change is only there to cause her more pain.
AFAIK Alina is not going to explore her Shu Han heritage. she's not going to use her power and influence to demand better treatment for her people. we're not going to see complex depictions of the wider Shu diaspora.
they should've just done colorblind casting
someone tell me did they at least add bonding moments between her and Botkin where he tells her about what it's like in Shu Han and teaches her a little of the language

Hey Southeast Asian friends! I plan on hosting a roundtable discussion of Raya and the Last Dragon on my YouTube channel to feature your voices and perspectives on the movie. If you're interesting in joining, please leave a reply so I can DM you a Discord server link!
The roundtable will be happening AFTER the movie releases widely, so you can still join if you only plan on watching then!
(smh @ Disney not even making it available in Southeast Asia though)
it took like less an hour for this server to turn into a food server
i just signed a mortgage for a house in a zoom meeting with my cow suit on and that pretty much sums my adult life up
my mom: WTF YOU CAN'T SIGN A MORTGAGE WHILE WEARING THAT, GO CHANGE
me: its too late it has happened
me taking one (1) photo for instagram: *THREE HOURS OF INTENSE MAKEUP AND HAIR PREP*
me buying a house: eh u know what i don't feel like changing out of this onesie
I watched Raya while I was also rewatching ATLA with a careful eye at details and it never crossed my mind that Raya is anything like ATLA beyond young Raya's design kiiiiind of looking like Korra
I was watching to see if I could do a "Cultural inspirations in Raya" video and I COULDN'T because most of the stuff was SO unfamiliar to me, an East Asian. This is how different Raya is on an inspiration level to ATLA.
I have more thoughts about Raya that I'll eventually make a video about (on purely a review level), but even plot and theme wise it was nothing like ATLA? Comparing them feels like a stretch tbh
thirsty on main for this alien, if you know who he is we're friends now
me, watching a Japanese tokusatsu show filmed in 1967: oh...my god....yes, you throw that Eye Slugger, Seven....Emerium Beam right at me....Work that pre-Ariana high pony.....
one day i will do a serious take on how this show is a cornerstone of Japanese sci-fi and pop culture and majorly inspired Pokemon, Evangelion, Dragon Ball Z, and many many more
Iron Widow is 400 pages of female rage conducted through giant mechas designed after East Asian myth creatures, inspired by China's only female emperor.
