- remember how companies have been promised close to zero import duties by setting up in Boris Johnson's 8 new freeports?

- turns out there are clauses in post-Brexit free trade agreements (FTAs) with 23 countries which effectively negate those benefits

shadow trade secretary @EmilyThornberry says the clauses could have been excised in trade talks:

“On the surface of it, this looks like a catastrophic blunder by a minister stuck in her silo....as a result, I fear that manufacturers....risk missing out on access to key markets."
these are the 23 trade deals which have clauses prohibiting “duty drawback”

Sunak is asked by @GeorgeWParker

- why 40 out of 45 towns receiving £1bn through new "town deals" happen to have Conservative MPs

new Tier 4 polling from @YouGov

- 74% support the introduction of Tier 4 for parts of England vs just 17% say they are opposed

- 67% support the Christmas rules changes vs 25% opposed

- 61% say gov has badly handled covid Xmas rules vs 33% say they have handled it well

the moment that Boris Johnson cancelled his 5-day Christmas relaxation of the restrictions:

- now most people are limited to a single Christmas Day with wider family

- 18m people in new toughest Tier 4 (including London) can’t have an Xmas bubble at all and must stay at home
people in “Tier 4” will be ordered to "stay at home" for a fortnight and will be restricted from socialising with more than one person even outdoors, while shops, leisure facilities, gyms and hairdressers will be closed.
