Starting a running thread with stories about the hacked city emails that were posted online by @DDoSecret. First, here’s our primer:

Last Thursday, a day before the publicly city acknowledged the hack, @SouthSideWeekly @jimdaleywrites published this story about Lightfoot’s behind-the-scenes lobbying for qualified immunity.

The @Suntimes on Monday reported that Mayor Lightfoot has been stalling on a fix to address the way the city investigates fatal police shootings, which currently violates state law.
chicago.suntimes.com/2021/5/10/2242…
Also on Monday, @ShiaKapos detailed a couple emails for @politico_il.
politico.com/newsletters/il…
That same day, Lightfoot told reporters the hackers squeezed the city for a ransom, but it declined to pay. She refused to answer questions on any hacked materials, which is in line with the city’s policy so far.

@MaryAnnAhernNBC on Monday aired a segment on the hack/leak and spoke to @CDRosa and Freddy Martinez, of @lucyparsonslabs and @DDoSecret.

On Tuesday, the @Suntimes reported that Chicago police quietly started a drone program with off-the-books forfeiture proceeds.

@BlockClubCHI also waded into the #JonesDay waters today (thanks @BauerJournalism). Here’s @MauricioPena story on City Hall breaking its promise to update Little Village residents before demolition work resumed at the old Crawford coal plant:

@dstru312 reports today: Two-thirds of the 270 police chases in 2019 — a total of 180 — ended in crashes and eight people died, according to a “pursuit litigation analysis” prepared for Lightfoot and marked “confidential.”

The data breach of a file-transfer service used by Jones Day is causing fresh headaches this week, both for the law firm and city officials in Chicago, @Reuters reports.

@jus10chi at @BlockClubCHI writes today about an email Lightfoot sent from her personal account about canceling her Tribune subscription over reporting she didn’t like.

Since there’s some renewed interest in the Proud Boys, I’m going to highlight some members operating in and around the Chicago area. First up is Brien James, a former klansman who started the American Guard and leads the Indiana Proud Boys.
splcenter.org/fighting-hate/…
James was among the white nationalist crew that joined a downtown rally against Kim Foxx last year. Here’s James chatting with Chicago FOP Prez John Catanzara at the rally. Image
James was there alongside Chicago Proud Boys, including “Trigger” Tom Christensen. Christensen has since been sentenced to three years in prison for stabbing another man at a concert at Northerly Island.

I'm over at the Thompson Center, where Gov. Pritzker will be talking about "ensuring fairness when awarding conditional adult-use cannabis dispensary licenses." Here's my story from yesterday.
chicago.suntimes.com/cannabis/2020/…
After going thru priorities of legalization law, Pritzker says his admin has heard for weeks "that more needs to be done to ensure fairness" in the cannabis industry and application process. Reiterates what's outlined in the linked story above.
Notes that all applicants who revise applications, challenge scores and get a perfect grade will be included in the lottery. Currently, only 21 groups had perfect scores.

I’m headed to the Thompson Center to cover multiple press conferences dealing with the state’s decision to whittle down 700+ applicants for new pot shop licenses to just 21 groups who will be included in a lottery to determine the winners.
Congressmen Danny Davis and Chuy Garcia and state Rep. La Shawn Ford are expected to speak about the “rigged” lottery at one of them. Image
The group claimed the lottery has been scheduled for tmrw, which former state Rep. Rickey Hendon called “a snake move.” One applicant said his group is now filing an injunction. Another suit obtained by the ST has already been filed in connection with the applications.

Avowed ‘boogaloo boi’ says he roamed Kenosha streets with Kyle Rittenhouse before shootings chicago.suntimes.com/2020/8/31/2140… via @Suntimes
Adherents of the boogaloo movement believe a civil war is imminent, and some actively look to incite one. One “boogaloo boi” who was photographed with Kyle Rittenhouse in the lead up to the shootings said as many as 24 boogaloo loyalists were in Kenosha.
Some vital background on the far right militia-style movement:

Tonight, I saw a member of the U.S. Marshals Service assist Kenosha police with a curfew arrest. He left in an unmarked vehicle. chicago.suntimes.com/news/2020/8/27… via @Suntimes
Shortly after publishing, we saw more marshals in this SUV. Image

Protesters and community members confronted Kenosha cops searching a van near 63rd St. and 20th Ave. Cops ultimately left after taking one man into custody. The van, which folks on scene said is being used to feed demonstrators, was allowed to drive away. Image
Just after police left, a group came marching through the area. Clyde McLemore, founder of the Lake County chapter of Black Lives Matter, said the plan is to march for the two ppl shot and killed two nights ago.
chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2020/8/2…
A few dozen people just marched around the fenced off courthouse a few minutes ahead of curfew. McLemore says he’s going to head home. “I’m going to obey the law and give them their curfew.”
