9 years ago, I transitioned to marketing from software engineering.

Since I was diving into marketing on my own, I didn't know where to start.

Now that I do know, here are the 3 marketing skills I wish I picked up first: 🧵👇
1/ Customer Research

Marketing is about understanding people.

It’s that simple. And that hard.

One of the best ways to get to know your customers is by interviewing them.

As an introvert, the thought of that made my hands sweat, knees weak, arms heavy

So I avoided it for far too long.
It’s only been in the past couple of years that I’ve invested time and energy into customer research.

It’s made a big impact on the campaigns I’ve run.
For example, we’ve generated $250k in sales in the last 8 weeks at ProductLed…

All as a result of investing in customer research, which helped us identify an irresistible offer to our audience. (More on that in a future thread.)
If you're looking to level up your customer research skills, the best resource I’ve found is @KateBour’s Clarity Call Cheatsheet.

It ain't free, but the ROI on these cheatsheets is through the roof.

2/ Writing

There is no more important skill for your career than writing.

Why?

Good writing indicates clear thinking. The ability to think and express ideas with clarity is invaluable.
Good writing is one of the core skills of marketing.

It's everywhere—from ads, blogs, and emails to landing pages, product tours, and in-app messages.
Unfortunately, for me, I write in code. My syntax is:

> If_, then_
> Since _, therefore _.
> If _ works, repeat.

Unemotional. Pure logic.

To top it all off, English is not my first language.
Lately, I’ve been more intentional about improving my writing.

It starts with getting into a habit of writing. Then, ask more experienced writers to review your work.

(Shameless plug: I've even written a book coming out soon productled.com/book/onboardin… )
Not sure where to start? Here are some helpful resources to improve your writing:

3/ Relationship Building

As an introvert, I despise networking events.

So, I kept to myself and didn’t make any marketing friends. That was a mistake.
Marketing is hard. Anyone who tells you otherwise is an outlier.

To have a community to support you and give you ideas is a career booster.
It’s only in the last two years that I’ve actively sought marketing communities and connect with other marketers.

It's made a huge difference in getting a fresh perspective on the things I'm working on.
I’ve found my “people” and “shine crew” through @coreyhainesco’s Swipe Files marketing community.

You know who you are. Thank you.

Corey is also doing a bootcamp for marketers, where you get to practice marketing tactics with a few dedicated folks.

What a better way to bond than through a kickass bootcamp!

I'm trying out a Twitter experiment:

Live on Twitter Spaces every Friday for 4 weeks: The #MarketingRant show

The goal: I get a marketer to rant about a topic they’re passionate about.
The first one is tomorrow (Friday) at 1 pm EDT with @amandanat. 🔥

Amanda is going on a #MarketingRant about common writing mistakes marketers make.

Amanda has a journalism background and is currently the Head of Content at @ShipBob.
Why Twitter Spaces?

Simple—I’ve already built an audience here. So has the marketers I’ll be talking to.

This is another way to build and connect with our audience.

I wrote a whole thread about it below:

An Instagram account for a dog, sure. But a LinkedIn profile for a dog?!?! I am dead! I requested to connect. 😂
OH MY GOODNESS... Millie the dog accepted. What should I message her?

Seth Godin rejected me last year by email... and I loved it!

It's an art to reject someone and make them feel good after.

Let me share Seth's rejection email and 5 reasons why I love it: 🧵
For reference, here's the full rejection email he sent me after I asked him to be on my podcast GrowthToday.fm

Two lines.

That's it.

Let me break down the 5 things I love about it.
1/ "thanks"

I love how he started off by acknowledging the request.

Instead of leading with "No," he first thanked me for the opportunity.

To me, this speaks to his humility. He probably gets a TON of requests. But a simple thanks speaks volumes.

Notion—a tool you don't get one day, then 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 get it the next.

Here's how the @ProductLed team uses @NotionHQ to run our company: 🧵
Let's start with marketing.

Our Head of Content created a Marketing page with different projects for each channel — metrics, website updates, repurposing content, optimizing content, case studies, email marketing
Inside one of these projects are tasks.

Priority and state are automatically picked up once you've set the due date for each task.

You can attach google docs, and assign tasks to people — so things to get lost in Slack!
