Not for complaining or criticizing I went to SDNP in 2019 to find out why .mw domains are so expensive. Short answer: Chicken & Egg scenario. Not enough domains registered (only 6000) for price to be low like .com (millions registered) but price too high for most to register.
As long as people don't register price will not drop and as long as price is high $80 to $100 (approx K85,000) people are not going to register a .mw domain when a .com and others cost $10 to $20 max (approx K15,000). So round and around we go. #Malawi #CODB #datamustfall
The actual cost of registering a .mw domain through the proper local & international authorities/protocols is currently at $40. This is the break even cost that every Malawian ISP (Globe, TNM, Skyband etc) has to pay to register a .mw domain for you (see registrar.mw).
Add in their costs of operations/margins etc and voila, you have each companies charge hence the $80 to $100. The costs of operations to authorities and ISPs are very real and not made up I assure you. So what are we supposed to do? ...well, my team had an idea (a 2part solution)
We have put together an initiative domains.co.mw driven by the aim to provide the lowest possible price for a .mw ($50) & increase the total number of registered domains to in turn lower the price further with time. But it gets better, not only did we become a registrar
This initiative for registering .mw domains at the lowest possible price is actually linked to an internationally recognized online payment solution & you can pay for your .mw domain from anywhere in the world (even from Malawi) using your Debit/Card or even Mobile Money. #DPO 
So no more dashes, 265s & mw.coms in website names. Not to mention this is a chance to end that high price chicken & egg cycle. Amalawi azanga, I have done my part. Please help us by using the service & letting others who need it know. All are welcome #resellers #ISPs #Webhosts
