THREAD: The seemingly coordinated right-wing noise and disinformation campaign targeting @Susan_Hennessey this week—another smart woman who worked hard to hold to account the worst excesses of the Trump admin—is a fascinating case study in the GOP's attempt to rewrite history.
1) As you may know, Susan—one of the smartest people I've ever encountered anywhere & former NSA lawyer—joined the @TheJusticeDept's National Security Division Monday as a senior counsel. Ever since, the right-wing noise machine has ginned up one false controversy after another.
2) First @ggreenwald attacked her for deleting old tweets, clearly a plot to disguise her past statements. The reality—as Susan has said!—is her tweets have long auto-deleted, a policy she began when…wait for it… @ggreenwald began auto-deleting tweets.
3) From there, the "controversy" about Susan was amplified, in a very tried and true pathway, from alt-right Twitter trolls to the Federalist and National Review to Fox News and on, each story seeming to rewrite the history of the Trump era and downplay its documented abuses.
4) Much of this "controversy" stems from the ongoing attempt to rewrite the history of the "Russia Hoax" and the Ukraine impeachment as giant nothingburgers, when both clearly are anything but.
5) This culminated in that WSJ editorial against her "partisanship" at DOJ, a remarkable statement given her *years* of writing—and even an entire book!—about the correct role and line between political appointees at DOJ. See, for instance, this argument: lawfareblog.com/what-bill-barr…
6) The WSJ actually cites as concerns such UNHINGED WILD WOMAN comments like @Susan_Hennessey saying DOJ dropping charges against Mike Flynn was "an astonishing assault on the rule of law," an opinion so crazy that ...
... the move by Trump and AG Barr led the case's prosecutor to quit in protest & *1,900* former DOJ officials called on Barr to resign, saying the AG "assaulted the rule of law"! washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
7) Now, in a predictable conclusion, @JohnCornyn clutches for his nearest pearls reading the WSJ editorial on Susan. Cornyn, of course, is often the ultimate patsy in these false controversies—the one who amplifies something from trolls into "legitimate" congressional concern....
8) Cornyn is no stranger to being confused and worried by the internet: He was recently flummoxed by another (woman!) DOJ appointee's *satirical* 25-year-old college oped: washingtonian.com/2021/04/15/a-s…
9) All week, the controversy about Susan has been a classic disinformation campaign: Mixing some truth, a bunch of bad faith, some unfounded conspiracy, and twisting it all together in such a way that no one will seriously refute it because it's so clearly dumb and pointless....
.... but along the way, unrefuted, it lays the groundwork for undermining legitimacy later and smears someone (often a woman!) in a way that will dog them for years.
10) tl;dr: Don't believe everything you read at Fox News. @Susan_Hennessey is smart, respected, oozes integrity, and we should all be grateful she's serving the country at @TheJusticeDept and working to rebuild what Barr so badly damaged.

THREAD: In reporting my new oral history of the bin Laden raid, I was struck again & again about the incredible cloak of secrecy thrown around this operation. Five remarkable details of just how secret—and important—OPERATION NEPTUNE'S SPEAR truly was: politico.com/news/magazine/…
1) The precision model-builders at @NGA_GEOINT who constructed the mock-up of bin Laden's Abbottabad compound didn't know what they had built or what it was for until they opened the New York Times the day after the raid and saw a picture of the house. politico.com/news/magazine/…
2) The NSA paused all software updates for weeks ahead of the raid, to avoid any risk of disrupting intelligence collection. NSA exec estimates just *50* people across the agency knew of the op; only after did he told the teams that had provided overwatch. politico.com/news/magazine/…

A thread of personal privilege: Last month, my @aspendigital colleagues and I lost one of my absolute favorite people @SavillaPitt to pancreatic cancer. She was just 36—far far far too young—and had just begun her career in tech policy. She was just the greatest.
To honor her legacy, the @AspenPolicyHub is now recruiting for our inaugural Savilla Pitt Memorial Fellowship, looking for techies who want to make a difference in DC or specifically interested in issues of tech and the environment.
The @AspenInstitute Savilla Pitt Fellowship is a paid fellowship or exec ed opportunity. If you're keen to make a difference in DC, APPLY before March 1.

@BetsOnTech, @vivian, @David4C1, me, & our @AspenCyber team will make it special. More details here: aspentechpolicyhub.org/savilla-pitt-m…

LAST NIGHTLY READING THREAD OF 2020: As a final #GMGReads for this generally awful year, here's the pile of books of I've gathered this fall that I'm excited to read in 2021... :

THREAD: As 2020 winds down, I wanted to share a #GMGReads list of my favorite books I read this year; it's an odd list, as I've read almost nothing for pleasure since June—I've been consumed my own book research—and I've struggled to read fiction concentration-wise this year...
This year's list is oddly filled by books about science and the history of science—paleontology, ichthyology, epidemiology, and more—but I guess it's a good year to be interested in (and trust!) science. So here's my (unordered) list of the top books I read this year:
1) George Packer's rakish biography of Richard Holbrooke OUR MAN is hands-down one of the best biographies I've ever read: bookshop.org/books/our-man-…

THREAD: Every death from Covid-19 is a tragedy—all 340,000 Americans so far—but it's hard to ignore that the Republican Party has become a literal death cult, all to assuage Trump's ego. Every state and federal elected official to die so far from Covid-19 is a Republican....
According to @ballotpedia, Republican Congressman-Elect Letlow is the first congressional member or member-elect to die from Covid-19, but there have been numerous state legislators to die too, all Republican....
Republican Rep. Bob Glanzer, of the South Dakota House of Representatives, died in April: ballotpedia.org/Bob_Glanzer
