👶 XENO-ESTROGENS AND BABY 👶

'Whats the big deal?' she said, as she applied her heavily scented, phthalate-containing cosmetic and sipped from her plastic-lined coffee cup.

Her 1st trimester test result had arrived. It was a boy.

'What is endocrine disruption anyway?' 🧵
Endocrine disruption happens when certain environmental chemicals mess with the hormone signals in the body.

Xeno-estrogens are a class of endocrine disrupting compounds. They act like estrogen and interfere with testosterone production and signalling.
Phthalates are used in body products to hold artificial fragrances, and are found in hairspray, perfume, moisturizers hidden on the label as 'fragrance' or 'parfum'.

Bisphenol can be found in plastic bottles, food containers, lining of food cans, DVDs and sales receipts.
Endocrine disruption is a problem for all people at all times. But its particularly harmful during the first trimester of pregnancy when baby's organs are being formed.

In this case, phthalate compounds and bisphenol compounds will block the normal action of testosterone.
Which organs during pregnancy rely on the right amount of testosterone at the exact right time to grow properly?

You guessed it.

Baby's genitals and testes.

Too much estrogen and not enough testosterone messes with the proper growth of the baby's urogenital tract...
Here's where things get interesting. Researcher @DrShannaSwan looked at the effect of maternal phthalate exposure on babies.

She did so by measuring the distance between the anus and genitals, called the ano-genital distance (or colloquially 'gooch').

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anogenita…
Normally, the ano-genital distance is twice the distance in males compared to females, as a result of testosterone exposure during development.

She used it as a proxy, or indirect measure of how much testosterone the baby has been exposed.
A shorter ano-genital distance, closer in length to a female, could imply that the testosterone signal was blocked or inadequate.

Which substances block testosterone? You guessed it.

Xeno-estrogens like phthalates and bisphenol-A (BPA).

And that's what they found:
"The associations between male genital development and phthalate exposure seen here are consistent with the phthalate-related syndrome of incomplete virilization that has been reported in prenatally exposed rodents"

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
Why does that matter?

It appears that a shorter reduced anogenital distance correlates to poorer fertility later in life.

If your gooch was shortened by inadequate testosterone exposure, your testes were likely effected in a similarly negative way...
Which is exactly what this study suggests:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
From the conclusion:

"both poorer semen quality and shorter anogenital length in adulthood may reflect a common origin, including a disruption of testicular development in utero, as suggested by the testicular dysgenesis syndrome hypothesis...
....which may be caused by exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals during the masculinization programming window. The increasing incidence of male reproductive disorders and decreasing sperm counts and testosterone levels in many Western countries supports this hypothesis..."
Taken together with animal studies, Swan's work provides very strong evidence that exposure to xeno-estrogens as a fetus reduces your child's future masculine potential.

Surely you wanted the best for your kid?
This should be more than enough reason for every mother concerned about an optimal pregnancy and a healthy child to avoid these chemicals like the plague.

Nobody want's to set their child on the wrong foot before they even have a chance...
And the effect of endocrine-disruptors is not limited to male babies in the uterus. In adults they cause:

- male feminization
- obesity + diabetes
- female reproductive problems
- hormone-sensitive cancers
- prostate cancer
- thyroid issues...

The xeno-estrogen crisis is so concerning because these substances are so ubiquitous.

It truly is is a civilization-ending problem, because every person in every country is being affected...
And we haven't even mentioned WHY these toxins are still in our food and environment despite decades of mainstream scientific research pointing to their harm.

Big Plastic operating in the shadows.

Diabolical...
But don't be disheartened.

The first step in solving a problem is recognizing it exists. For a comprehensive list of substances to avoid, check out the work of Dr Anthony Jay, one of the anti-xeno-estrogen godfathers.

'Oh..that sounds bad' she said as she put down her disposable coffee cup.

She took one look at the label of her cosmetic before tossing it across the room into the trash.

She grabbed a make-up wipe and started wiping.

'We've got some work to do baby'.
