No, they are both assholes. The only reason Jobs was "worse" is because he had tremendous power over many people. He was "worse" because he was allowed to be an asshole to far more people. Which is why we fire assholes now before they become CEO.
White guys are real good at making the case for “Everything is permitted. Unless of course it’s inconvenient for people like me. Then it’s unconscionable.”

It's not being an asshole that's the problem. It's that they want there to be no consequences for being assholes.
When white men talk about freedom it has always been about the freedom to oppress other people. They dress it up in all kinds of different ways. But that's the freedom they feel they were promised. Freedom from consequences.
White men love Steve Jobs not only because he was hugely rich and successful. They love him partly *because* he got away with doing it while being a huge asshole. That's what winning feels like to them. When nobody can stop you from doing whatever you wanna do.
If you look at the tech leaders who have risen to popular culture, it's generally the people who are assholes. There are lots of rich white men to choose from. American culture is obsessed with the ones who wreak havoc.
I hate to give Scoble this much air. But I gotta make one last connection for y'all. The reason these men wanna follow men like Jobs is because they plan to continue to be assholes. They just want to gain enough power to get away with it. That's the dream.
The very real world view of a lot of men is that you can get away with anything if you have enough money and power. And white men have been the most successful group in history at showing how big you can go with it.
We talk a lot about how these men show us who they are over and over again. But every now and then it looks like they are trying to show us something different. All that means is they are experiencing consequences. They realize they don't quite have impunity yet.
This also explains why they're so up in arms at recent shift towards holding even powerful white men accountable. They thought Harvey Weinstein had achieved enough power to be untouchable. The idea that this wasn't true sent them into a tizzy.
Men like this are constantly searching for the tipping point that makes them untouchable. The only thing that has changed recently is that they are also affected by our modern era of social medial. So they are whining about it publicly as well as in their back rooms.
Their fuckery is *visible* in a way that I don't even think they fully understand. They keep getting confused about why people aren't falling for the bullshit as much. We can *see* you bro. You keep saying the quiet part loud. There is no more quiet.

This is why Republicans talk about "small government". It's only government that can get in the way of capitalists being allowed to actively exploit people for more profit.
I believe we are still introducing a lot of the population to the concept of "a living wage". I think a lot of conservative white people still hear it as foofy liberal jargon. But here it is in stark terms.
I can't say that I truly understand what these conversations sound like among conservative white people. I don't know how the people making 2.15/hr justify that to themselves and continue to go vote for it.

I like how the same cult of personality that created the precarious crypto bubble can tank things just as capriciously. You love to see it.
Elon Musk can destroy billions of dollars of value with a few words. And these clowns don't even get to know what his actual stake in bitcoin is. It's wild.
I didn't know how bad things had gotten with cryptocurrency until I fell down a rabbit hole on youtube recently. There are literally dozens of coins and massive speculation around each. People making their living from giving day-trading advice on cryptocurrency markets.

I don't know y'all. Why do we have to take everything that we think should happen and try to claim it is "easy"? And anybody who's not doing it must be incompetent. That's not healthy. It's okay to acknowledge something as difficult and also say we should still do it.
This person wants to talk about "innovating" in the same breath where they're like "fuck you if you can't handle 40 hours a week of zoom". Come on now.
Some of y'all just wanna get back at people who wouldn't let you work remotely. I get it. This is your time to be petty. Don't let me stop you. I just want folks to know that we can see you, so I hope it's worth it.

When we talk about reparations for Black Americans, it's not just some principled thing. We're talking decades of direct theft. Our wealth has been stolen from us over and over again. We are owed. And no matter how many times it is proven, nothing is done.
I also want to highlight the mechanism by which white supremacy stole from this woman.

Pay attention to this. They used other Black people to justify lowering the appraisal of her home. They said let's only compare to other Black homes. Quote from article: "I...
This is where you see that there is no magic. It's just humans making decisions. No system is immune to racism. Every system gives humans some discretion in how decisions are made. And every system has some racist white people making those decisions.

Something has been bothering for a long time about "virtue-signaling" as a phrase. I finally figured it out. This is white people saying "you know you're only pretending to care about this."

Virtue-signaling is how white people tell us they *know* they're full of shit.
Labels like virtue-signaling are an unintentional examination and acknowledgement of white culture. They're telling us that many white people don't believe what they say. They will conform to any ideology if they feel it serves them. They're saying that's what white people do.
As soon as you start to think about it this way, it's a pretty serious indictment. It's an acknowledgement of so many of the things we talk about. That Whiteness is incentivized against true equity. That Whiteness is socialized to reject input from PoC.

Wow. This story is wild. I have to be careful because it hits literally every confirmation bias I have. Rich white guys who are incompetent and waste tons of money. Republicans making shady deals and screwing people over. Right wing punditry as fall back.

"I got rich playing baseball. I bet that qualifies me to run a video game studio."

Check.

"A Republican governor is offering me 10s of millions of dollars to move to his state and create jobs. Seems legit."

Check.
"This loan has terrible terms and we're burning through capital at an accelerated rate. Better spend harder."

Check.

"Huh. When our new investors found out we were out of money and weren't going to deliver the game, they backed out. That's unexpected."

Check.
