here's a very obscure IBM PC graphics card! it's the video card for the 3270 PC. the smaller card is the keyboard interface, which also contains the video BIOS. let's see if it works. Image
it's coming up in monochrome mode. I'm not sure how the card is supposed to detect a color monitor. Image
the card I have is just for text modes. another card allowed for custom fonts (programmed symbol card) and a third card enabled a graphics mode (APA).
much better. I just had to tie pin 4 to ground.
1-3: and
4: monitor select
5: green
6: blue
7: red
8: hsync (23KHz)
9: vsync Image
the font looks... strange.
it's super hard to photograph this scan frequency. I think it's too close to my camera's frame rate Image
here's the 3270 native character set. there are some funky symbols there! Image
heh, the 3270 display buffer acts like an overlay. Image
trying out the keyboard cable I built. there's an MCU on board to convert the AT keyboard signals to the PC/XT protocol. however I'm getting error 302 on boot. out comes the logic analyzer. Image
looks like it initializes the AT keyboard correctly. Image
but then there are some suspicious protocol errors. not sure what is going on there. Image
then when i press a key, it *almost* works. the upper two traces means that the MCU is prematurely sending a scan code to the XT motherboard port even though only 4 bits of the scan code have been received from the AT keyboard! clearly something is not right. Image
and the scancode getting sent to the motherboard is 0xF0. that doesn't sound right either. Image

the second revision of the Graphics Gremlin just arrived! time to assemble it.
my solder paste technique is definitely not @GregDavill quality but it'll do.

made in 1986!
on the left is the my existing monitor with the stand i 3D printed. i made the design with only a few grainy pictures of the real stand for reference. not too shabby!

picked up this absolute beast of a hard drive. this is the Maxtor XT-2190! it stores 160MB when formatted. this was huge for 1987.
it's got 4 defects. they give you those numbers on the label because you have to manually enter them when you low-level format it!
I'm not sure it's working because the drive's logic board isn't screwed down. and it's missing the insulating spacer so it can just short out against the metal case 😐

"you know what I'd do if I designed my own video card? two CGA cards at the same time." Image
the composite waveforms are close but not an exact match. Image
but how can I tell if the colors are right? like exactly right? Image

on the bench of destr--err--healing today: this crappy 486 motherboard which needs an upgrade for its 14.318MHz oscillator. Image
some backstory: this motherboard claims to handle 3.3V processors (like the DX4-100) but it has no 3.3V regulator!
here is the PLL chip. there is a nearby crystal (14.318MHz) which it uses to generate all the clock frequencies used by the board. Image
