It’s been a bruising day for GPs and their staff across the country.
Working non stop (and face to face) during the past year has been ignored by parts of the media and now it seems NHS England.
Anxiety, depression & PTSD is increasing. We are 10,000 GPs short and…
/1
….. we have 1/3 of the number of beds per head of population compared to Germany.
1,000,000 appointments per day in general practice. Unlimited access to GPs for about £120 per year per patient. A bargain.
Embracing new technology and working closely with patients…..
/2
….we have done all we can to care for our patients under the most difficult of situations. But it isn’t enough for the Telegraph, Mail, Express, Good Morning Britain & many others who care not a jot how their nasty attacks & mistruths strike like a dagger to our hearts….
/3
…. I’ve seen GPs in tears today. GPs seeing this as the last straw & just wanting to throw the towel in. Staff who have been abused on the telephone with screaming patients, wondering why they go to work for this.
General practice truly used to be the jewel in the NHS crown..
/4
….but it now so short staffed, so underfunded, so disregarded, so abused, so belittled, so misunderstood, so often dumped on from on high that in this watershed moment I wonder where we go from here. I worry for my colleagues & the service they want to give to their patients.
/5
…. The attack dogs in the media and commentators full of hate for us need to be called off and we need to be given the proper resources we need so we can provide the best care possible. Come on politicians. Make it happen. I’m waiting.

I wonder if @RMTunion@ASLEFunion@Manuel_TSSA are aware what happened at Stafford last night. Over a 1000 people told to leave multiple trains by @VirginTrains at 9pm and advised ‘no onward transport will be provided’. Major incident at station with staff unable to cope /1
The police had to be called. Elderly in wheelchairs outside were cold and vulnerable. Small babies and parents no idea what to do. All hotel rooms booked up. Some coaches arrived and drivers didn’t know what was happening nor where to go. There were no contingency plans /2
There should be plans for a major incident like this but clearly there isn’t.
It was a v dangerous situation and the distress and anxiety was palpable.
It should be on national news @BBCNews@itvnews@guardiannews . Virgin twitter feed apologises as best they can /3
