"Use of fear to control behaviour in Covid crisis was ‘totalitarian’, admit SAGE scientists, now regret ‘unethical’ methods..."

Thread... 🧵

telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/05/1… #EndTheFear
SAGE committee SPI-B notoriously recommended in March last year that ministers needed to increase "the perceived level of personal threat" from Covid-19 because "a substantial number of people still do not feel sufficiently personally threatened"...
Now, Gavin Morgan, a psychologist on the SAGE team, admitted to Laura Dodsworth @BareReality for her new book A State of Fear: "Clearly, using fear as a means of control is not ethical. Using fear smacks of totalitarianism. It’s not an ethical stance for any modern government..."
One SAGE scientist told Ms Dodsworth:
"There were discussions about fear being needed to encourage compliance, and decisions were made about how to ramp up the fear. The way we have used fear is dystopian."

Another SAGE member said: "You could call psychology ‘mind control’..."
The Telegraph reports:

“One SAGE member warned that 'people use the pandemic to grab power and drive through things that wouldn’t happen otherwise…

We have to be very careful about the authoritarianism that is creeping in'.”
Telegraph:

“Another member of SAGE said they were 'stunned by the weaponisation of behavioural psychology' during the pandemic... 'psychologists didn’t seem to notice when it stopped being altruistic and became manipulative.

They have too much power and it intoxicates them'.”
MP @SteveBakerHW said:

"If it is true that the state took the decision to terrify the public to get compliance with rules, that raises extremely serious questions about the type of society we want to become..."
MP @SteveBakerHW:

“Do I fear that Government policy today is playing into the roots of totalitarianism? Yes, of course it is...”
Recovery has been warning that a Campaign of Fear is being deliberately carried out to control behaviour, crossing a barrier into seriously unethical practice by the Government’s behavioural scientists.

This report confirms SAGE members themselves know it...
Perhaps the creepiest comment of all in the Telegraph article, though, is when a SAGE member says: “Psychology has had a really good epidemic, actually.”

Do we really imagine, after 14 months of fearmongering and ‘nudges’, that these tactics will stop unless action is taken?
As SAGE SPI-B know very well, fear is our most powerful emotion. It is rooted deep within the inner reaches of our minds. When we're afraid, we do dangerous and irrational things.

Manipulating our most primitive instincts to change behaviour is taken from the textbook of tyrants
Over the past year, we have seen the biggest Campaign of Fear the world has ever seen.

And it has been at its worst in the UK, where SAGE + the Govt took a conscious decision to use fear to ensure compliance.

We now face an unprecedented mental health crisis...
Fear has been used like a dirty bomb by SAGE + the fall-out is contaminating every aspect of life.

Support Recovery. Let's hold the behavioural scientists to account + ensure these unethical manipulations can't be used on an unsuspecting public ever again timeforrecovery.org
