@kinsellawarren Canada has had an elected female MP who won the leadership of a political party and became PM.

Canada has not had an elected female MP who won the leadership of a political party and led said party through a general election that resulted in her party forming government.
@kinsellawarren The reasons for why the latter has never happened is where the real debate lies.
@kinsellawarren 1/ Women bear a disproportionate cost of child rearing. So unless you're from deep privilege, many women must choose not to have kids, wait until they're independent, or have a partner who load shares to have the time over years to build the networks needed for such an endeavour.
@kinsellawarren 2/ The characteristics that many perceive to be needed in the leader of a country; passion, charisma, smarts, unapologetic primacy - we still live an a society where these are tacit negatives in a woman (too pretty / ugly, bitch, hot headed, emotional, intractable)
@kinsellawarren 3/ Women don't have instant access by virtue of gender into institutional patriarchal networks needed to cultivate power
@kinsellawarren 4/ Women are sometimes selected to lead political parties at the end of a dynasty of power as a way to soften the damage caused by men, rather than being seen as a viable figure to lead a movement into power to begin with
@kinsellawarren 5/ The highest offices of power and largest institutions in our country are rife with systemic misogyny. The debacle with the Canadian Armed Forces is just one example of many.
@kinsellawarren 6/ Women are subjected to political purity tests in ways that men are not.
@kinsellawarren 7/ Female elected officials are subjected to gendered threats, abuse and violence in ways that men are not.
@kinsellawarren 8/ Female leaders must constantly fight to ensure hard win gender equality rights are not eroded. This labour / time is something that males don't have to do, and can subsequently spend that bandwidth on self promotion and power acquisition.
@kinsellawarren 9/ Male MPs rarely have their appearance and apparel routinely critiqued in the same gendered manner than women do.
@kinsellawarren 10/ Insert every intersectional issue re income inequality, gender pay equity, systemic discrimination that BIPOC and LGBTQ person face here and layer them on top of 1-9 above.
@kinsellawarren 11/ Women who do get elected are subjected to endless lazy "women in politics" victim porn interviews which steal their voice.
@kinsellawarren 12/ Female MPs are often tokenized by men in power to give cover to their perpetuation of systemically misogynistic power systems that benefit them, as opposed to being welcomed into actual positions of power. Women must fight for that themselves.
@kinsellawarren 13/ I could go on and on. But we all know 1-12 exist. Most just choose to do nothing to change their own behaviour and privilege, and so the system persists.

1/ I probably will disagree with most of @AnnamiePaul's policy positions, but how could I know if her voice can't be heard? Her voice is worthy, and this type of treatment is indicative of how women who seek to upend the status quo are treated in politics. So, to you, Annamie...
2/ Rule one, do not be polite. They want you to be nice and polite to keep you complacent and keep the status quo alive. When change must be made, at all costs, avoid being polite. In you is a militant, angry, fearless and ruthless woman. Unleash her.
3/ They will hate this. They will never like you, and they will seek to marginalize you, but they will deal with you because they have to. This is a workable situation, because it is a situation you are in control of, not them.

This exchange b/w Morneau & LPC backbencher shows where the sword is being pointed on the Trudeau/Morneau We scandal by the LPC: a junior female cab min who isnt part of old Laurentian money circles @BardishKW. This is why women shouldn’t do men’s dirty work. (Via @brianlilley)
The reality is @BardishKW has dutifully carried water for Trudeau on many occasions, answering questions in the House for him on a range of shitty topics, including his history with blackface, the groping allegations, Aga Khan island, SNC Lavalin and more.
And what did @BardishKW get after the election for all the water she carried for those men? A demotion. I don’t agree with her on a lot of stuff but this is bullshit. It’s also a cautionary tale for her and others like her.

1/ Ok. I'm just about done my zoom calls for the day and catching up on this, so let's do this. Thread. Before I do, I ask you all to read this. mprempel.ca/news/f/mp-remp…
2/ Since the Star got personal I guess I will, even though I hate doing so. I've never believed in the whole "work life balance" myth as it relates to politics. To do this job well it is all consuming. Period. I've gone through two major relationship breakups in politics.
3/ Last year something miraculous happened - I got remarried, to someone who understands that my community comes first. He has been through a lot himself, but has always, ALWAYS supported my work for my community. Even writing this makes me tear up with gratitude for him.

1/ Derek, with everything else going on in my community that I need to fight for, I can't believe I have to use my platform explain to you why what you said at precisely at the 0:40 mark of your video is so profoundly wrong, but here we go. Thanks, buddy. Thread.
2/ "Does she work for China or for Canada". That's what you said. Not, "I have concerns about the advice she's been providing to Canadians" or "the response of the WHO needs to be severely scrutinized". Why did you use the former phrasing as opposed to the latter?
3/ I can't believe I have to say this (and profuse apologies to her to have to be part of a public object lesson to an MP), but Dr. Tam is of Asian heritage. So when you say, "does she work for China or for Canada" many people will think you're suggesting she has dual loyalties.

1/ Thread. Hi @GovStitt. I'm an elected official from Canada - kind is the equivalent of an American Congressional rep. However, I have have a big problem that only you can solve. It's close to my heart, and is causing me no end of anxiety, and it's related to COVID-19.
2/ You see, I got married to one of your electors about a year ago. He voted for you, and he proudly served your country for over 24 years in the army. I have three step kids by him, and I'm worried because of the lack of state clarity on isolation measures related to COVID-19.
3/ Like you, my days are spent fielding countless calls on how to protect our community from the spread of COVID. Like you, I come from an oil producing fly over region that is routinely overlooked by the elites in the populous power bases in costal regions of our nations.
