Professor Damasio conducted this intriguing experiment...
He took a couple of people who were completely normal, everyday people, but had one little issue.
They were emotionally impaired. i.e.
They had issues with the emotional part of their brain.
his discovery?
He found out that even though these people were normal, yet.. they found it impossible...to make simple decisions. Something as simple as what to have for lunch.
i.e They knew they were hungry, but found it impossible to actually decide what they'll eat.
His conclusion?
Which has been validated with more research.
People make decisions based on emotions and then justify it with logic.
Now let me ask you...
why won't you jump in front of a moving bus?
if you answered "Because it doesn't make sense"
You lied.
It's because you are afraid.
The emotion "fear" is the reason why.
You immediately came up with other reasons why you wouldn't jump.
So what does this mean for you?
First Appeal to emotions, back it up with logic.
People would quickly nod in agreement.
This is why many communicators, start a message by cracking a joke, telling a story... something to get your emotions working... and then slips in their message.
Every copywriter knows this.
