2/7 There was a 79% increase in monthly opioid-related deaths during the #COVID19 pandemic. By December 2020, on average, 8 people experienced a fatal overdose each day in Ontario
3/7 People experiencing homelessness have been particularly impacted by opioid-related deaths during the #COVID19 pandemic, accounting for 1 in every 6 fatal opioid overdoses
4/7 The #COVID19 pandemic is changing where people are experiencing overdoses, with a large rise in fatal overdoses within shelters & hotels repurposed as isolation & physical distancing shelters. 1/4 deaths among people experiencing homelessness occurred in one of these settings
5/7 An increasingly unpredictable unregulated drug supply contributed to hundreds of additional #opioid-related deaths across Ontario, with a 10-fold increase in detection of unregulated benzodiazepines after fatal overdoses
6/7 Urgent, coordinated actions is required from all levels of government to respond to this crisis, including expanded access to safer spaces to use drugs, safer opioid supplies and low barrier access to treatment
