Penn State’s Faculty Senate has approved removing gendered and binary terms from course and program descriptions circulated within the university.
According to The Daily Collegian, proposition AD84, a.k.a. the Preferred Name and Gender Identity Policy, would substitute they/them pronouns where applicable in university materials.
The policy would also replace gendered descriptions like freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior to first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year students.
On its website, the Faculty Senate says AD84 will 'ensure that all people are not only able to choose their name & gender identity within our systems, but that these documents and systems are also structured to be inclusive from the start.'

In an effort to address the mental health burden that Black students face in the education system, Taraji P. Henson has created a 6-week mental health campaign that's launching during Mental Health Awareness Month.
Called The Unspoken Curriculum, the campaign is designed to combat racial bias in the classroom. Before making her big acting break, Henson worked as a substitute teacher, where she says she witnessed that racial bias against Black students firsthand.
The campaign aims to equip Black students with educational videos and resources that 'advocate for meaningful change in the classroom by rethinking and reforming the lessons Black students learn in school.' The 6-week program runs from May 17 to June 21.
