Antisemitic attacks have surged in the past weeks. There have been reports of hate crimes in the U.S., Argentina, & Canada, as well as across Europe. No one should be silent about this violence. Opposing actions from the Israeli state does not entail acceptance of antisemitism
I sense a lack of outrage over these incidents. We shouldn't make our condemnation of bigotry contingent. And I think it says a lot about our own biases that so many seem to think recognition of antisemitism and Jewish victims somehow entails support of Netanyahu's actions.
If that's the default in your brain, it is an antisemitic one & you should fight it.
On another note, I will say that the vast majority of pro-Palestinian protesters in the U.S. & Europe have been peaceful. New organizations should be careful to not conflate individual actors with whole communities or causes.

There are so many people who will be harmed by the new abortion restrictions, especially people of low socioeconomic status. Today I am also thinking of the people who want to be pregnant but find out their fetus has severe genetic abnormalities that may be incompatible w/ life.
In the case of such abnormalities, those who carry to term are not wrong to do so, nor are those who choose to terminate. Many base their decisions on survival rates. There are some abnormalities that result in very short, extremely painful lives for infants.
I can understand why some may be anti-abortion for religious reasons, tho I think it is immoral for them to impose those restrictions on others. There is something especially hypocritical about forcing people to give birth to infants who then only experience pain before death

Here's my new piece for @johnastoehr. Over the past year, the GOP has both denied the results of a democratic election and waged a war on public health. The success of these deceits would not have been possible if not for a decades-long assault on our shared reality.
"The Big Lie" has only succeeded because minds were primed for it. The GOP lied about Medicare. They lied about Civil rights. They lied about climate. They lied about WMDs. They lied about the ACA.

They even lied about President Obama's citizenship. stoehr.substack.com/p/47871a77-863…
The "Big Lie" about the election is not, in fact, separate from all of the lies about COVID. 2020 was a year in which the GOP succeeded in both undermining the results of an election *and* convincing many Americans to disregard hundreds of thousands of their fellow citizens dying

The "scrappy fringes," you say
Yes, yes, I know, Marine Le Pen is not her father. She's just as islamophobic, better at hiding her anti-semitism (though still not great), BUT she never tortured men in Algeria w/ electrical cables, so there's that
In any case, Marine's project of "softening" the image of her father's party has in fact been a decades-long pursuit and the revelation that she's a Cat Lady is just the most recent iteration. But then there's also stuff like this:

One can say that the Israel gov't has enacted apartheid w/out stipulating that the state of Israel should be destroyed. There are many oppressive states in the world & the focus should be on reforming them, not destroying them & leaving citizens stateless, the pathway of genocide
Unfortunately, rampant anti-semitism has made it much more difficult to criticize Israel, such that, if one says they have engaged in apartheid, the inference is that the state should be destroyed, given that is what so many on the left argue. We need to decouple these things.
India is a oppressive state. So is Pakistan. And Chechnya. Yet we never let criticism of these states coincide with conversations about their destruction. We would never argue that the oppressive acts of factions w/in the states should leave all the citizens stateless.

This is a really important piece by the @nytimes, in which they identify cases in which the sickle cell trait was used to explain the death of Black Americans in police custody. Note the sickle cell trait was also invoked in Chauvin's defense over the murder of George Floyd.
This research reflects a broader pattern in American culture wherein Black people are viewed as both so strong they must be restrained w/ extraordinary measures, but then their own health is blamed when they suffer. Here is my previous piece about this
This is not so disconnected from how we blamed Black people for being particularly susceptible to COVID. In white American society, Black people must be restrained & controlled. We also view their own health as a causal factor in their sufferings.

Stop equating all Palestinians w/ Hamas. This isn't accurate, first of all, and, second, Hamas has killed Palestinian civilians (including children) in this recent cross-fire as well.
Understanding this is the right thing to do for the Palestinian people. It also adds context to 1. Israel's choice of targets & 2. Hamas' decision to have military areas in civilian areas. Both 1 & 2 are bad and lead to many dead Palestinians.
If you care about civilian life, neither Israel or Hamas should be firing where they are firing. Both are either showing lack of care over civilian casualties or using casualties as a method of war (which is a war crime)
