I've been thinking a lot about individual freedom and how activists dupe those in power to adopt well-meaning policies in the name of the "Greater Good" that slowly chip away at our freedoms until what remains is a Totalitarian State ~total state control of our lives.

#SeeMasks
I see it happening at all levels, not just the state, but the work place, social media, etc.

Activists come in all guises, but they say the same thing:

"If we adopt this Good Policy, we will create a Better World™"

Then the policy gets weaponized for profit and to punish.
For example, in academia. A seemingly innocuous policy like "create a safe environment for students to learn" (who would argue with that? I'm for it.) becomes weaponized to stifle speech, fire professors, and disinvite speakers.
The same thing happened on social media. An innocuous policy like "create a safe environment for discussion" (again, who would argue against that?) becomes weaponized — an excuse to shadow ban and suspend anyone who thinks the Wrong Way™ and makes someone feel "unsafe".

PUZZLE

Suppose a disease effects 2% of the population.

Suppose you have a test that's 95% accurate (i.e., 95% of healthy people are diagnosed as healthy & 95% sick are diagnosed as sick).

If you are diagnosed as sick, what are the chances you're actually sick?

Hint: Not 95%
Hi. I forgot to post the answer: 27.94%.

The point is just because a test has a high degree of "accuracy" (95%) does not mean you are highly likely to be sick. Do a second test to be sure.

It helps to plug in numbers to see this, but you can just multiply percentages: Image
In plain English. Given 1000 people & 2% are sick:
980 Healthy
20 Sick

Given 95% accurate test:
980*.95=931 healthy diagnosed HEALTHY
980*.05=49 healthy but diagn. SICK
20*.95=19 sick diagn SICK
20*.05=1 sick but diagn HEALTHY

Diagn. SICK:49+19=68
Actually sick:19
19/68=27.94%

Since I confessed being a former liberal let me tell you part of my conversion story. I was in a meeting circa 2007 w/faculty in engineering, fine arts & business. Certain faculty were bemoaning having to choose between a woman and a black man for the upcoming primary & the…
… the engineering prof, who was himself a democrat, and part Hispanic, said incredulously ~ "I can't believe what you're saying. That's not how you choose a president!"

The room became quiet and we moved onto the agenda. But he got hell afterwards for saying that. They wanted…
… to formally report him, and he was really shaken up. Me? I didn't understand what the big deal was. It was only much much later when I learned about triggers and microaggressions that I figured it out. But that incident is what started me re-examining my own political beliefs.

Here's an example of that strange assumption that minorities need people that "look like them" in order to succeed. In this case it's teachers.

Where is the empirical evidence?

I actually never thought about my teachers' skin colors (math TA accent—now that's another matter!)
You know I like logic problems, and that statement doesn't pass the logic test (where you test generality by replacing variables).

For example, replace "nonwhite" with "asian" (becomes false)

Replace "nonwhite" with "white' (becomes racist!).

So it's not a general truth.
So I started looking for the research, and yes there was research showing an effect of similar demographics. But correlation is not causation. And the research also admitted that more research was needed into the underlying explanation (i.e., mediating variables). For example…

This shadow banning of the President's tweets is really bizarre. It's not a bug in Tweetdeck. I know because I often download the president's tweets with a custom scraper, and my custom scraper can't even grab his latest tweets.

So this *is* Twitter shadow banning (throttling)
BAM! The two tweets finally showed up… AFTER A TWO-HOUR DELAY. LOL! And Twitter says they don't "shadowban" (actually "throttling" when the tweet is delayed).
I didn't realize I wasn't the only one NOT seeing the President's tweets (to be fair, it only started for me today). Shouldn't someone inform the president? This 2-hour+ delay allows the "other side" to take control of the narrative, UNCHALLENGED, for several hours. Very sneaky.
