Today is #WorldSchizophreniaDay and I am thinking of all the Black folks I know living with schizophrenia and how it remains one of the most heavily stigmatized mental conditions in our communities.
Even as Black mental health conversations have grown publicly, I see so few advocates uplifting folks living with schizophrenia or who have psychosis symptoms.
Our communities still have a-lot of fear, misconceptions and trauma around the condition
We have to start talking more about schizophrenia as Black folks. And talk about psychosis and substance use, and how the war on drugs links to the stigma and fear we have. There is alot of hurt and harm there to unpack, but we cant transform mhealth without going there
Black folks, what have u learned about Black folks living with schizophrenia? What have been ur experiences and assumptions? What has been rooted in reality versus the media? How has this contributed to dehumanization of our folks or our selves?
