The deference to PRC irredentism would never be tolerated in other contexts. Imagine our WWF stars apologizing in German for implying that Alsace-Lorraine was in any way a part of France. And yet that territory (along with half of Europe) changed hands more recently than Taiwan

I think the proper course here is to have Taiwan continue de facto independence while trolling the PRC by having them formally apply for American statehood

This stuff would be silly except that it normalizes the idea that China has a right to attack a peaceful, prosperous, and pluralistic democracy next door at a time of its choosing. We don't tolerate a similar threat in Korea, but China gets a pass
