✨Some personal news✨: I'm excited to announce that I have accepted a new role as @Criteo's Brand Safety Officer.

I will be receiving no pay, no equity and also they never offered me the role. But I accept. Here's all the times I've kept @criteo's customers safe:
In 2019, I helped @criteo keep @OutdoorVoices ads off a vile, anti-Semitic website called OneAngry Gamer.

This is the kind of thing their brand safety technology should have identified - but instead, I did! 😇
In 2019, I helped @criteo protect its own ads from 4chan. No, YOU'RE welcome. I was happy to help, Criteo!
In 2020, I helped @criteo keep their clients @thisisADAY & @ModCloth off a sketchy French content farm. The pleasure was all mine.
In 2020, I helped @criteo identify a website called "Russia Insider" as not a good place to serve @pactorganic ads. 'Twas an honor.

In 2020, I worked with @slpng_giants_pt to find @criteo serving ads on disinformation outlets all the way in Brasil 🇧🇷! It was so special for me to experience a different country's disinformation culture ❤️🌎
Last summer after months of bringing up the issue on Twitter, I told a Bloomberg reporter to ask @criteo about their monetization of The Gateway Pundit. They dropped the site immediately!

That is the kind of proactive team I'm proud to join. 😊🙌🏼
Last summer, I worked with @criteo's Chief Media Security Officer @catthekin to unravel the ROI of a Criteo campaign.

It turns out that about 95% of your ad spend with Criteo does not contribute to ROI - and is likely complete garbage! 🎯

Until last April, @criteo was serving client ads on RedState, a website that was hosting revenge porn of former Congresswoman @KatieHill4CA.

That is, until I, Criteo's unpaid Brand Safety Officer stepped in. My passion is doing brand safety for free! 💪🏼
We found @criteo working with SouthFront, a Russian disinformation operation that is literally on the U.S. Sanctions list.

Phew! That one was a close call. 😅 As usual, I was just glad to be of service. ❤️

Today, I'm so proud to say that I helped @criteo identify Bongino(.)com as brand unsafe.

I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to continuing this work until the end of the time or until this company self-destructs. Onward!🥳

The smartest minds in America are figuring out how to get people to click on ads.

The smartest minds in other countries are figuring out how to exploit our lax privacy standards to gain access to Americans’ personal data and further undermine our democracy.
The more I learn about adtech, the more I’m starting to realize “brand safety” is the least of our concerns.

Surveillance capitalism may track & monitor us to sell us crap we don’t need - but they also sell our personal data to the highest bidders anywhere *in the world.*
And believe it or not, some of those bidders aren’t trying to sell us shoes and assless pajamas.

They’re out to undermine the US’s position as geopolitical powerhouse. Having access to American psyche, which we have so helpfully collected for them, is a key part of the puzzle.

Yesterday, we wrote about the adtech companies that are violating U.S. sanctions to funnel cash to Russian disinformation operatives.

But there are quite a few other tech platforms involved too.
SouthFront uses @PayPal for donations. They collect the cash under the very innocuous "Payment for information provision and analysis services."

This is all hella illegal.
SouthFront is also raising funds through @spring4creators. This means Spring is also violating U.S. sanctions to work with a Russian disinformation operation.

NEW: @GoogleAds, @RhythmOne, @OpenX, @taboola, @disqus, @sovrnholdings, @AcuityAds, @criteo, @TheTradeDesk, @xandr & @NextRoll_Inc are all violating U.S. sanctions against Russia.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the advertising industry.

Two weeks ago, the @USTreasury announced sanctions on four outlets it had identified as Russian-backed disinformation operations.

Naturally, the first thing we did was go hunting for ads. And boy, did we find ads. Nearly every major adtech co is sending $$ straight to Russia.
This isn't just a "brand safety" issue. These adtech companies are facilitating extremely illegal transactions on behalf of their advertiser clients.

Clients like @oldspice, @saks and @nikestore.

NEW: I think I know how Steve Bannon is still collecting his ad bucks — and it's with a little help from some of the biggest ad agencies in the world.

branded.substack.com/p/steve-bannon…
Last week, I was watching War Room Pandemic (as one does) when they cut to an *unusually* high-quality commercial break.

Naturally, I tweeted about it and knowing what I know, knew that this was going to be news to some of these advertisers.
And I was right. Like clockwork, @NortonLifelock, @GoDaddy and @GoodRx all vanished from the lineup after my tweets.

This told me they didn’t place their ads themselves - their agencies did it for them.

Guys, I got my hands on a secret Fox News sales deck lmao
Yes, I promise you this is real.
Rent is expensive these days, so I’m just thrilled to learn that I’m living rent-free in their heads along with @juddlegum!!!

It’s not just the @nytimes that should be denouncing Tucker Carlson Tonight.

The @iab is still partnering with Fox News, lending it credibility and support — and actively encouraging advertisers to sponsor the network.
I’ve raised this issue privately several times with @bradberens, who has hosted Fox News on @iab panels like “The Value of News.”

I said actual news orgs don’t launch targeted harassment campaigns towards female reporters (like @BrandyZadrozny.)
I emailed @bradberens twice last month to open up a discussion on @iab’s relationship with Fox News.

I didn’t hear back. I’m not surprised. They don’t see themselves as playing a role in the harassment and physical endangerment of reporters just doing their job.
