George Floyd’s murder a year ago wasn’t the first time America saw a modern lynching.
Maybe it was the highly visible, consecutive lynchings. Maybe it was the fact that, in the midst of a pandemic, many were besieged by these images and, for the first time, couldn’t look away.

Organizers from Minneapolis to Boston to Lagos mobilized to demand accountability. But a person’s murder should not require global uprisings against state-sanctioned violence to result in consequences.

Ending qualified immunity is the most substantive aspect of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. We can’t afford to abandon it.

I'm holding the Floyd family close today and pray they know healing and peace.
I also pray that my colleagues at every level of government remain acutely uncomfortable with the fact that our work won't be complete until we legislate to dismantle every system that finances and perpetuates brutality, murder and state-sanctioned violence at home and abroad.
