The UEFA Cup final reminds me of an experience I had at UITH. I was at the emergency that night around 11pm when some guys strolled in. One of them said, "doctor something bite me for leg". They were walking from a viewing centre back to their hostel at Kwara Poly.
His friends kept on insisting that nothing was wrong with him and that it was a piece of wood that scratched his leg. They said he was high, cos he had been drinking Alomo at the viewing centre. I brought on my "continuation sheet" and wrote somethings down.
After some minutes he told me he wanted to leave because his friends were getting restless. My church mind said "keep the guy under observation" but the A/E wasn't a comfortable place to keep someone who appeared to be fine. I asked him to seat beside the consulting table
I didn't see any sign of a bite, I checked his leg, I didn't see any mark. And I gave him my ipad to watch some movies just to keep him busy for few more minutes. I went to the call room to eat and while eating the nurse came to call me, she was shouting hysterically.
I went back to the A/E and saw the guy on the floor, sweating and vomiting. He was foaming from the mouth as if someone emptied a sachet of Ariel in his throat. Suddenly he wasn't responding to calls anymore, he was going into shock. Snake bite !!! Kasala ti boxx
We placed him on the bed, he kept on jeering and flapping his hands. Some of his friends took off, they couldn't believe that a seemingly normal person could deteriorate in minutes. I had never seen a case of snake bite envenomation before. We placed him on oxygen..
I called my registrar, Where can we get antivenom? We called the pharmacy, the Pharmacists also made some calls and we got some antivenoms and we started the preparation of the antivenoms . We gave him the antivenom and like magic all the symptoms resolved before the next day.
I thanked my stars that I didn't allow him go home. I would have had to explain to God and Man, my career would have suffered for it.
I learnt a valuable lesson never to ignore "simple things" in healthcare. Nothing is simple or severe until you are sure as a doctor.
The power of life and death could be in our hands at any minute and there is a thin line between the two. We also need poison centres and certified toxicologists in Nigeria. No toll free or hotlines to poison centres. Poison centres should be established in states.
This is a basic local govt function, that should be available and accessible at every primary health care facility. This is a failure of healthcare and public health at the primary level.
Our LG should have poison centres with dedicated line. We cannot build Nigeria from the top

There is no universal standard definition of unemployment. Various countries adopt different methodology. Nigeria uses 40+ hours per week for employed persons, 20 - 29 hrs as underemployed and < 20 hrs per week as unemployed. Ghana uses 1hr per week to categorise employment
Unemployment is not synonymous with Job losses. The major drivers of the unemployment rate in Nigeria are high birth rate and population growth. 7m babies are born each year in Nigeria, those born in year 2005 are now 16 yrs . They have moved into the Labour force as unemployed
Now compare the birth rate of Ghana vs Nigeria. Nigeria has one of the highest birth rate in the world. Ghana has a population of 31m, it will take Nigeria less than 7 years to give birth to the entire population of Ghana with under 5 mortality and death rate.
This is a message from my Town association. It's a rural community with no police presence. We need to contribute money for a patrol vehicle. We will also build a police post. The FG sends total strangers to my town as policemen, officers who don't care about the people.
2 policemen, total strangers to police a town of about 6000 people. The policemen have nothing to lose, it is not their land. They aren't responsive and they are never available. They keep giving the people excuses. They extort the people as well..
What is the essence of this FG police force if my community is left vulnerable and the people can't farm to make a living.
The marble and other mineral resources in the town is wasting away. The FG took their resources can't protect them and won't allow them protect themselves.
Smart Adeyemi was in the Senate where the Police budget was passed, he knows the police structure is underfunded and understaffed.
National Assembly got N128bn to manage the affairs less 500 lawmakers, the Nigerian Police force got N441bn to look after 200m citizens.
The number of police officers Smart Adeyemi has guarding him, his family and properties across Nigeria, is more than the Policemen guarding at least 5 communities in his state.
We have a senate committee on police, how much has been released to the police force from the budget?
How much was released for equipment, technology and training. How many communities in his state are adequately manned by policemen? What is the essence of sticking with a centralised police force that leaves the rural areas exposed? The rural areas are ungoverned...
The little I understand here, House officers are on a 1 year training and they should be paid separately from the civil service scale. The civil service scale is fixed and ranked. The civil service scale is the albatross confronting the review of their renumeration / allowances.
If a house officer is on Grade Level 12 according to the civil service scale, their salaries cannot be reviewed higher than level 13, they cannot earn higher than the next level above them. The entire salary scale will need to be adjusted for that to happen.
If other perks are considered for HOs, the govt must review the allowances of other workers on the Salary scale. Civil servants on a higher salary scale will revolt and ask for a review as well because their "juniors" on the scale can't earn more. A total review must be done.
We have a large border we can't secure, extremely porous. We are surrounded by weak and poor countries. A man can walk from Mali, Niger or Chad into Nigeria with a rifle and start "catching" Nigerians like rabbit for ransome.
We have a central police system that has collapsed..
Police personnel insufficient and the command structure dead. We have large ungoverned areas in rural communities with no police presence. In these rural areas, we have poor infrastructure in that delay urgent response to crime. We have lots of internal criminals as well..
Insanity ia simply defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Some states have civil servants that take up 90% of their FAAC and IGR. Cut them to 50% and use the savings to fund a proper state police structure...
Governance is about inclusion, participation and partnership. Several years of military rule, have made a lot of Nigerians believe that "government" is an exclusive zone, an enemy. An enemy they must constantly be in battle with, they mustn't trust and they shouldn't be part of.
The most popular people since the 80s and 90s are govt antagonists. The popular radio and TV stations are those who continously attack the govt without preaching inclusion and participation. In a democracy, the govt is a reflection of the people, nothing more, nothing less.
Someone told me "Ijoba o feran wa" meaning the govt doesn't like us. I asked which govt? Who doesn't like you? Your LG chairman, your HOA member, HOR member, your senator, all the commissioners, the governor, all the ministers, the FG all woke and decided to hate you.
