The idea that provincial legislators have to resign if they wish to run for a seat on municipal councils, but not the other way around for councillors...it's baffling to say the least.
When former councillor Eve Adams ran to become a Conservative MP, she was criticized by #Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, who "hung around long enough to criticize others for doing what they’d already done"
Historical sidebar: McCallion was a former mayor of Streetsville before #Mississauga's 1974 amalgamation, afterwards she was elected councillor in the new city and ran for mayor in 1978 and beat the incumbent, Ron Searle
Difference though is Hazel ran during a regular election year, and so wasn't exactly shirking on her duties between being a council member to becoming #Mississauga mayor. Adams made her federal jump less than one year after reelection to council.
Former MPP Bud Gregory was a councillor before making that transition, as was @SteveMahoney04. The late former councillor Larry Taylor ran against Gregory in 1985 for @OntarioNDP but was unsuccessful.
As for @DipikaDamerla, her situation is somewhat different from @EveJAdams, in that she is seeking reelection as MPP in the tail end of her council term, not right after it began.
The key conclusion is, do resident of any other local community deserve an elected official focused on applying for another job while still being on taxpayers dime?
