Recently, @HCDSB chose to *not* #FlyTheFlag and instead focus on staff training to create a "shared understanding".
This is problematic. When elected Trustees feel that human rights are optional, how will this be represented in our schools?

The following is a partial transcript of the @HCDSB Board meeting on May 27/21.
The context of the following script was in the debate of hiring practises within @HCDSB, and specifically promoting the hiring of staff from under-represented groups.
I: “There’s too much focus on human rights, and we know from precedent setting legal cases that although we want to uphold the human rights, our denominational rights are front and centre, and they do override most of this, but this particular policy doesn’t speak to it.” ...

Agnew: “Can you confirm for me that you actually said that we have too much focus on human rights?”
I: “The focus that I am referring to is the wording, and there is no overriding mention of our denominational rights. That’s the focus with which I’m speaking or I’m addressing”

Agnew: “So you’re looking to see the denominational rights supersede the human rights”
I: “That is correct”.

Sita Jayaraman, human rights and equity manager, did an information session on May 9, 2020 for all Trustees. This session was entitled "Centering Human Rights & Equity in Educational Leadership".
@Vincent4Trustee while in attendance demonstrates a lack of understanding.

This is why mandating education alone is not enough! Our students deserve better than this. #FlyTheFlag
